I've got some really good bullets, that were advertised as 440gr but delivered at 465gr, It's not a big deal, you just need to understand that cast bullets vary depending on the ratio of the mix of lead and other materials. It's like a car company advertising 40mpg with the small print saying your mileage may vary. Or 0-60 in 3.5 seconds but you can only do it in 4.5 seconds, things vary depending on the conditions that were used to set the parameters.
It's simple, weigh your bullets and load accordingly......it's really not a big deal.
This is my humble opinion,.........Trapr

I consider it more of a big deal I guess, they are going back. And yes I do understand about weight variation with cast slugs and your analogy. I look at it this way though. If I wanted 300 gr bullets I would have ordered some. I didn't. Been reading about this particular bullet for years and wanted to try them at their advertised weight of around 270 or so grains.

nolongcolt, I have both the RCBS and Miha versions of the RCBS 270 SAA. My slugs drop out at 285 grains, as most I have read about this bullet seems to be the case. Bullet lube probably adds another 5 grains. Now we are up to 290 or so. Dave Scovill's intent on designing this bullet was to make one as heavy as possible and still be useful with the fixed sights of the Colt SAA. It is indeed a fine bullet.
Perhaps you should try some Lyman 454424 slugs, my favorite, which drop out at 260 grains, give or take, and once lubed, are just shy of 265 grains.

Well, again as I said, I have been wanting to try this particular bullet for some time due to all the rave reviews of it and would prefer it be closer to intended weight. Western says they can get it closer so I am giving them a chance to do so. I will update when I have them. Thanks.

All the rave has been from people who have been loading the 285 grain 270 SAA. Even Brian Pearce noted in Handloader magazine that his are running 285 grains. That's where I first read about the bullet. The hollowpoint version of this ran 265 grains for me, 247 with a large hp and 285 for the solid SWC.

How will Western get it closer to 270grs ? Use harder alloy, make it a HP ? Or ? You may end up with a bullet that is no longer the one you've heard raves about and now want to try yourself. Wish you luck though.

This reminds me of when a guy gets a chrono, and finds out the load that he killed 20 deer and 2 elk with is not generating the FPS number he had in mind, and now his confidence is blown. Don't fixate on the bullets weight sitting on the scale if everything else is good to go. Note, just use the 850fps diet, shoot it until its lighter...LOL !

Yeah, but again, none of you have mentioned anything over about 10-15 grs over. These are 20-25 grs over! I am in contact with Western, they are going to take them back and send me some that are closer to spec. As I said, mine from the same mould design were 290 grs., or roughly 20 grs. over.

Other than your dissatisfaction with these bullets, how was the rest of your experience with Western? Prompt shipping? Quick response to an online order or a phone call? I've never dealt with them, but they have a Bunch of interesting bullets!

YMMV, but I called Western 3 times over a week and then ordered from elsewhere.

Nolongcolt I'm sorry your unhappy with the bullet weight you received. I hope you get what you want in the end.
May I ask a question here. It is in line with the thread topic, sorta..?
Let's take the bullets you ordered 270gr, but they showed up at 285/290gr. HOW WOULD YOU LOAD THEM FOLLOWING THE MANUAL? WOULD YOU USE THE 270gr Recipe, or load slightly lighter powder charge ? What's the best plan of action when bullets are heavier than intended/listed in manual's, IF a heavier cast load is not listed?
Thanks Ray

Contacts with Western is hit or miss. Took 2 emails each time to get a reply. Took about 3 weeks to get the bullets shipped. When I asked about the heavy slugs, they offered to do it again, I did pay to ship the bullets back and didn't ask for them to pay for it, would be nice if they did, but I wont insist on it. I have ordered from them before and was happy overall.
To BigBore44, that was the issue with me. One normally loads to the heavier weight data. I load that way. If a bullet weighs 300 grs I don't load it to 280gr specs, though in reality its probably OK depending on other factors, I just don't like to.
