I picked up one of these used a few days back. I love the old 44 Special and the only reason I bought it.
Have a full battery of 44 Special guns. From Charter Arms Bulldog, to Ruger Flattops, to full customs and a Colt New Frontier.
I figured this would make a good knock about gun.
Today, I decided to shoot the gun. It turned out to be my most accurate 44 Special ever.
Three separate five shot groups averaged .88". I was thrilled with the guns performance. But, wanted to heave when I thought about the money spent on other 44 Special guns.
This one was well under $400 OTD.

Had the Taurus 44 Spl 4" back in the early 90s shot well, but the forcing cone was really thin. Would like to have the 3" 44Spl Taurus as a carry gun. I don't know if they made them but I was thinking of a set of Uncle Mikes sq butt boot grip and a 200-215 grain SWC at 850-900 would be a great set up!

I had a Taurus 66 in 357 mag. It was one of the most accurate, if not the outright most accurate, 357 I've ever had... but I shot in loose in about a year.
I'd get another, like the 44 Spl you describe, if one came along. But I'd baby it just a touch to make it last longer.

I won't ever shoot this one with over standard 15,000 psi loads. It will do anything I need at that level.
With those Matt's Wadcutters velocity isn't a huge deal anyways.

Matt's wadcutter speaks with good authority at any velocity, great choice. Bought a couple hundred of Matt's full wadcutters for one of my 44Spls and really like the projectile.

I like them too. They have outshot every other bullet for me.
They also hit harder than any bullet I have ever tested.

I remember when those came out and always wondered about them. The fixed sight 3"er reminds me of the old belly guns, and with accuracy like you're getting - that would be great. Congrats on your 44.
And thanks for the link to Matt's Bullets.

Same experience on the Taurus. My father gave me one ages ago because he said it was a POS. Worst trigger I've ever seen on a DA gun. It laid around the safe for years, but one day on a whim I had Jim Stroh redo the trigger, round the butt ( which isnt any kinda standard size, BTW) and in general clean the gun up Stroh said trigger a "challenge."
I shot the gun against my M-24, a custom Bowen "Mountain Gun" .44 Soecial, and a couple of the SAs. The Taurus out-grouped them all. Surprised the hell out of me!

I had the 431: fixed sights, 3" barrel. I so wanted it to be my PPP but it was a piece of junk.

Michael B This one has a typical factory trigger as well. I won't change it as I bought the gun for packing around the woods where I live and carrying in the side by side. Ordered some Hogue rubber grips with finger grooves for utility use. John Taffin says he has one in his bedside table every night. With the fine collection of revolvers he must have, I consider this a glowing endorsement. Never saw this fine performance coming, but sure happy that it did.

Not the same , but the same experience . Along with the Smith these are these. A couple of Rossi 720 K frame 5 shots . The funny thing is (and it feels so wrong to say) the Rossi 720 DAO out shoots and handles easier than the Smith DAO 296 .

Hi...
I have had one of the stainless Taurus adjustable sight models in .44Spl. for years.
Only Taurus I own and it is accurate and dependable (unlike a Taurus .357mag I once owned that keyholed just about every round that I ever shot out of it and "patterned" large groups at 7yds).
This 5-shot Taurus .44Spl will be here as long as I am.
