Details about that box (age, operation, how'd you get it) would be nice Zane. lol, well it's a Kenmore, and it's around six months or so old. it's what most folks call a JABOD forge aka Just a box of dirt. it's a simple side blast design, I used an old grill for the body, some brick I had laying around to form the fire pot, some clay in the form of super cheap cat litter, a 3/4" piece of black pipe for the tuyere and a hair dryer for the blower.
basically you lay the bricks in the shape you want and fill the surrounding area with cat litter, this helps hold your heat in. then you make a wet mixture of clay, little sand and some wood ash and you use that to form your fire bowl. the bowl itself doesn't need to be big, 8" long x 5" wide x 4" or so deep. you want to use a 3/4" piece of pipe for the tuyere, any bigger and it'll be too much air and you'll burn through your fuel faster. also you need to make sure you have an inch or so clearance from the bottom of the fire pot to the bottom of the tuyere, that way clinker aka trash has room to collect and not block off your airflow. once the fire bowl dries out you add the fuel you want to use, lump charcoal, coke, coal, or even corn, light it up, add your air source and you're good to go.
coal is hard to find around here but in the winter tractor supply sells 40 pound bags of anthracite coal so I got 400 pounds of that. anthracite can be tricky to use and unlike hardwood charcoal or bituminous coal it requires constant airflow or it will go out. because of that I went with a hair dryer as my blower. it blows into a dryer hose which is wrapped around the tuyere. a hair dryer even on low will put out much more air than needed so to adjust your airflow you just point the hair dryer slightly away from the hose till you get the amount of airflow you want. pretty simple and cheap way to play around with it.
I rebuilt my fire pot today and took a few more pics for you.
