Should almost be a prize for the 1st person that can tell me what this is I will hint that I used it at the spring black powder shoot a couple years ago, as a rain diversion... any guesses??? hmmm... too many hints... better to ask if anyone here has ever seen or used one personally??? My neighbor has a blackpowder splitting wedge. He touched it off one time in a big pine stump (3-3 1/2' or so) and then pulled each half out separately with his tractor. Glad I got see it in action but they are sort of scary tools. Eric

ERIC... you are correct sir... it is a black powder splitting wedge... being cautious, I've only ever used a 50 A.E. case of black powder ( don't want to damage it ) but the chamber is huge... probably holds several 100, ( 4 - 500 grains??? ) of powder... guessing it could hold a stick of dynomite's worth of powder???
they are big & heavy, & fly up into the air quite high... betting lots got lost, when the owner was ducking for cover & didn't see where it landed...

Hiek's is about 14-16" long and takes about 3/4 ounce of Fg. I think he said his dad made it back in 40s or 50s. How big is yours? Hard to tell the scale in your photo.
Eric
P.S. I think you're right about them getting lost. I didn't like the idea of that big chunk of metal going wherever it felt like.

Neat. Sometimes I wonder how commonly they were used in the past.

Thanks. It is a beast, but unfortunately it has been sitting for 10 years. I used to tow it all over the country 4wheeling and then we moved to GA and fuel prices went through the roof. My last trip to Moab, UT from GA cost me $1500 in fuel alone. I have 3 Broncos (76 and two 73's). My wife is bugging me to restore the 76 for her to drive around... In case anyone is wondering - yes, I did make it up that obstacle... Man I love those old Broncos. I've had a couple of them when living in Montana. I like em better than Jeeps. I've never had a modified one like yours. I sure wish I still had my last one. 76, 302, 3 on the tree factory 4:10 gears w/LS rear and actually 4:11's front ( pulled like crazy), power steering, aux fuel tank, rear spare tire carrier. It was loaded! I'd chain it up on all 4's and man would that thing go through the snow in the mtn trails.

Awesome!!! This thread is turning into a real Dandy.... Thanks fellas. Some really cool stuff in here. Love the old Broncos myself. I had a nice 78 back in 89-90. Sure would like to get me an older style one one of these days. Prices have gone through the roof though these days, even for a rust bucket I did just get a nice '76 F250 4x4 back in August. Nothing like the oldies, when they were still made of steel Good Stuff guys. KEEP IT COMING!!! BigBore44
