A nice send-off from the Regiment. Second to last day in uniform. CONGRATULATIONS, TIM! Your humility is admirable, but anyone who knows anything about you knows that you deserved at least that. No, I don't know you like I'd know a guy I'd served with, but your character speaks loudly regarding who you are.
tinkerpearce wrote something up once about those who serve/served which was one of the best expressions of that type of character I've read. I can't find it now, but Tinker, if that wasn't you, please correct me. It was on another forum or a blog somewhere.

Thankfully more than one example of that lives here.

Make me a set of grips that color and I'll buy them. Funny, I wrote a letter to Roy Fishpaw asking for something along those lines and it was lost in the translation.

Carbon blades, top to bottom: A 'stainless' Benchmade Bugout in S30V steel for color/lighting reference. New carbon steel on an Old Hickory 7-7". Those spots are as-received from the factory. Old Hickory 3.25" Pairing knife, aged naturally thru use. Old Hickory 4" Pairing knife that was cold blued near new. Morakniv Basic carbon steel that has probably seen some lemon juice or similar to produce color, but it's not far from the new Old Hickory. I've been phasing out the old chinese junk from my kitchen and replacing it with better junk! I love how classic the Old Hickory line is and I love that it's made in USA. However, make no mistake, they are cheap and they look cheap and they feel cheap! But, that works well for me. I can reshape the handle so that it actually fits the metal(note i sanded the name off the 3" knife because it needed so much shaping). I can practice my sharpening on them without care. I can forget to wash them and not cry in the morning. Gives me a good little project. I've been told that you should not cold-blue kitchen knives, and I believe it. Mine is holding up just fine, however I don't think it's a particularly desirable finish for this use. I think it's slightly porous, so on a gun it holds oil, but in the kitchen, it holds moisture against the steel. You can see the grey near the tip where I believe it stayed wet and formed actual rust, popping off the blue layer. Anywho, I'll probably update this in a couple days when my next Old Hickory knife arrives!

"What makes you say it's 'cheap'?" Here's another angle of the 7" Hold Hickory. In the above picture, you see a wide, even bevel, about a half-inch wide. Here's the other side. It tapers to almost no bevel at the tip, so whatever you're chopping is getting the full width of the blade right away. At the very tip. it looks like it was done with a grinder: uneven and wavy, almost gouges. I'm not well-equipped to fix a main-bevel, but I suppose i can't hurt much!

Seancass I reshaped the blade on an old 7” like yours a few years ago that was an absolute wreck, replaced handle with some curly maple from the farm, and kindly asked the better half to please not put it in the dishwasher!

I miss the old spark makers on the backside of can openers.
