I've forgotten who it is that posts the stories of the lad at the range that tries but falls short. The last story was about a scoped lever action. Not as colorful as that but here it is. Once a year there is a camping trip at the end of January where a group of my friends go to the woods in Ocala Fla. Some of these guys I've known 25 years but only seen 25 times. Those who have motorcycles, rail buggies, side by sides etc bring them and we stay from Thursday to Sunday. There is lots of meat and the only vegetable is the occasional potato. Saturday nights snack was backstrap and spec. Anyway there's a guy that wants so badly to be an expert on guns he will tell you so much about them. My buddy that fried the spec just picked up an older Para 1911 4.5" that was awesome. I stripped it and taught him the basics of the gun and told him the history of JMB and the 1911 trials. As we were shooting this person came up and told me to make sure that Mike knew that once the slide locked back you just had to slap in a fresh mag to get the slide to drop. Ugh. Then when we were done shooting and I was telling Mike about the 9 drops of oil I put on a 1911, this person chimed up about using hollow points to clean his gun. "When I'm done shooting whatever I got I put five hollowpoints through it, they clean the barrel". Ugh

I've met a few. I went shooting with a guy from church once. Just once. You couldn't tell him anything because he already knew it all.

I will freely admit that when I was younger,,, I listened to others, that I thought knew stuff about guns. Then, as I aged, and tried things,,, I found I'd been mis-lead quite a bit by those other folks. Unfortunately,,, I know I repeated stuff I'd been told by these guys. Fortunately,,, I learned my lessons & hopefully make less mistakes like that anymore. Experience is a wonderful teacher,,,, for those willing to learn.

Spent quite a few nights in Ocala, listening to lies around the campfire and riding four wheelers.

One of those situations, I once heard the phrase "I could fill a book with things you don't know, maybe you should read one". Seems fitting here.

I've mentioned this story before but when I was in the Air force in Texas (1966-1970) I worked part time in a Gibson Discount Center & they sold lots of guns & thats the department I started in. Heck, I was 21, had shot a few deer with my brothers 336 Marlin levergun, how much more did I need to know? You see, the guy behind the counter is always suppose to know the answer to everything & I was pretty sure I was already there. There wasn't a day that went by that those old Texas boys didn't carve me up like chpped liver & they loved every minute of it. As it worked out I didn't know a firing pin from a clothes pin, I just thought I did. This beating went on for a couple of years until they finally let up on me a bit. One old gunsmith, a retired sargent major from Dodd City, Texas took me under his wing & starting teaching me which end of the gun the bullet came out of. Moss Cosper saved my bacon & my pride, that is, after beating up on me for a very long time. We became fast friends & he even came to Idaho after I got out & I took him on a packtrip into the Selway country & him & his brother in law got themselves a bull elk. Both elk were dandies! I also killed a monster bull on that trip with my flat top 44 magnum, what a hunt. I worked behind that counter for 4 years & when I left I finally had a decent knowledge of guns but its a never ending process & 50 years later I'm still learning. The forums are great but also can spread some bad information that gets spread quickly & is hard to reverse once it happens. One last thing about that Gibson's store. One time we got in 80 of the Marlin 39A lever action 22's that are such great 22's. The selling price....$48! I bought one & shot lots of LR rounds down that wonderful barrel. One day a friend from Ohio & I were hunting on a store customers property & I had the trusty 39A in hand with a Single Six on my hip. My buddy was 30 yds or so to my right in some heavy cover. We were just woods bumming, just looking for anything to shoot at when all of a sudden my buddy hollers, there's a fox coming right at you! I stop & 2-3 seconds later here it comes, see's me & breaks hard to my right at top speed. I only have time to swing the Marlin from the hip & snap off a fast shot. The distance was maybe 20 feet, not sure, it was happening fast & it was gone. I walked 15-20 yds to a little gulley & there, lying on its back is a snarling Bobcat. Its dying, I've made a very lucky shot, hit it though the lungs & its growling but dead in another 6-8 seconds. I holler at my partner & tell him its no fox, its a Bobcat. He hurries over & we can't believe it, it happened so fast & so close it was almost self defense. It was a full grown female, I had her mounted & have her to this day in my family room, 50 years later. The rubber boots are because I don't like snakes! Dick

Perterra, may I ask is the Flag a Country or State Flag? No disrespect intended, I've never seen it before. Thank You, Randy Miller
