JD has got a lot of people interested in handguns thru the years. I'll admit my T/C career predates SSK, but he sure pushed it along.
I just added another SSK barrel to the stable, a 14" 250 Savage.
You can't run out of things to learn about the T/Cs. Mine start at 17 Hornet and end at 50 Alaskan.

I have one older SSK barrel... a 6 X 223 SSK... but am thinking I need a 50-70 Contender barrel, & they would be a good option for the 50...
my current range of Contender barrels goes from a custom 17 Mach 2, to 45-70... I've been dragging my feet on an Encore, as I can see the money draining from my wallet after that purchase... maybe after I pick up the last couple Contender barrels???
I saw several 25-35 barrels at that auction I went to a couple weeks ago, & with my recent interest in quarter bores, I'm thinking I need one... trouble is, all those auction barrels were 10" light weight octogon barrels, & to me the 25-35 should be in a 14" barrel

My best and favorite barrel is a 25-35 Ackley Improved. It is barrel #1 by VVCG.
Easily shoots a 100 grn Nosler BT at 2800 fps. Groups around 1/2" @ 100 yards.
Have reloaded some cases 14 times due to the tight chamber tolerances.

VVCG is now Match Grade Machine. The barrel is a 14" Contender barrel. I keep velocity around 2700 fps on the Contender frames, 2800 fps on the stronger G2 frame.

Encores are great too ( although I do like the contender better). Actually my 375 is on the Encore platform because it is just a little more recoil than I wanted to subject myself to in the Contender.

it's my understanding, that alot of those JDJ cartridges are right up to the limit of the Contender... I think the 50-70 chamber ends up pretty thin, to still fit in the Contender action... but I'm not wanting to hot rod that one anyway... I have an old Martini in that caliber, that I load "sane" loads in, I think anything safe in that rifle, would be safe in the Contender... I got reinterested in the 50-70, when I moved all my stuff from the old reloading corner, to my new gun room, & I saw just how many of the old Dixie brass cases I had for the 50-70, plus I think they are still available... maybe even also from Starline??? I could definately see getting an Encore & maybe a .243 barrel for my 1st... but I know I'd be into it, & up to the 416 Rigby in no time

Not that I'd want any of the 225 Win based JDJs in an Encore but the 444 based rounds such as the 358/375 JDJs benefit from the extra pound or so.

Do you guys think a 45-70 can be managed without a muzzle brake (using reasonable loads)? Trying to decide what route to go, but I am not a fan of muzzle brakes due to the huge increase in noise.

mine is the 14" ported hunter barrel, & you can feel the concussion from 10 ft away, with the ported barrel...
I wouldn't want a 10" ( don't know if they ever made a 10" ) but I wouldn't mind a 14" unported... but then I'm not very recoil sensitive...

Thanks - I am not recoil sensitive either, but the damn ports drive me nuts. I have only seen ported barrels on the used market, so I guess I am gonna have to bite the bullet and order one straight from SSK. Gonna hunt down a G2 Frame as well.

Again, I shoot the 45-70 in the Encore but it is without any brake - no problem. A while back I decided to split the rounds I planned on firing across the two platforms for a couple of reasons but mostly because I have a degenerative joint disease.
Contender from 22LR,22 hornet through 35 Rem. Encore in 375x444, 45-70, etc.
It has worked out OK as the spot/stock cartridges have remained in the Contender for the most part.

I had a 50-70 Contender barrel back in the day made by JD with 4 port Magna-Port. When I bought it it came with 25 loaded rounds. I shot those and thought not too bad but didn't know what they were loaded with. I called JD and he told me to load 44g of 322 behind a Lyman 515 I had bought. I fired the first round of that load and the pistol hit me in the top of the head. I think you run into recoil issues before pressure problems.
