The idea of the purse, in my estimation, is that you can be walking through the park or parking lot or whatever and your hand is on the gun as you walk.
If there are sketchy peeps around, that's how I treat a pocket carry firearm. Hand in pocket makes for a very fast draw (practice with an EMPTY gun!).

Hard to wear a fanny pack with a dress though, unless you are wearing tennis shoes with it. I cant imagine someone in a very nice dress having any other option. Now we are prioritizing fashion... I've got nothing to refute that...

I like that many of the guys on here are not just telling you to get a certain gun for her, I see that too often. Not one gun is right for everyone, especially women. I have taught hundreds of people to shoot, many of them with no experience at all and many of the women (women are the best students). Like many have said, let her try different guns if possible and make sure she can even operate them. I have had many women without the hand strength to rack the slide on even small autos. Even women who are personal trainers and in great shape, just don't always have hand strength necessary. On the same note, I have had women without the finger strength to pull the trigger double action on a revolver. Others simply cannot deal with even minor recoil.
Most on here are shooters and smart enough to know but one mistake I always see when guys buy their women guns, is getting them a small gun because she is small. Especially guys I work with are always buying their wives snubby revolvers because it's "perfect for her" when she has never shot. Even a seasoned shooter often has a hard time shooting these tiny guns because they take more practice and skill to shoot well, so why would we give one to a shooter with little or no experience. I understand if she will actually carry it that it can't be huge, but the biggest gun (size wise, not caliber" she can comfortably conceal and carry will be best. If it's a house gun, size does not matter (you keep telling her that anyway right?..) I tell people if they want it as a house gun, get a full size gun, preferably a 9mm if she can handle it, the recoil is mild and it's easier to hit with.
I personally hate tiny guns and tiny calibers, but that being said, anything is better than her fingernails, even a .22 or .32 or .380. In my experience though personal favorites are Smith and Wesson M&P pistols in whatever size fits her needs or Glocks of whatever size fits her needs because they are both simple and easy to use. If she needs something smaller, the Glock 43 or 42's are nice. The M&P Shield is nice but many of them are having problems still with reliability, some run great, some don't. The Smith .380 is tiny as well. Worse case scenario, a .22 in the eye socket is better than nothing.
These are just my experiences, again most importantly is let her handle and shoot many pistols if possible.

I've got nothing to refute that... I prioritize fashion every day, in the business world there are codes you have to go by? Most woment will not wear a business dress with a fanny pack, or an evening dress with a fanny pack. I'm 58 years old and have never seen it. Most women wont be carrying speed loaders, extra mags or back up guns (hell i dont carry a back up)

To be clear on my point...I'm not arguing FOR a fanny pack. I also don't prioritize fashion over my safety. My point was that there are better options and purse carry may be a bad one.
I assure you that if you call a good hide stretcher you could be very well heeled under a nice dress.
I was only making a point that I had not heard anyone I trust make a case for purse carry. I had in fact heard just the opposite...meaning the gun should be secure, accessible and on your "person".

I had in fact heard just the opposite...meaning the gun should be secure, accessible and on your "person". May well be so. I have carried quite a bit, and ignoring fashion, most handguns can be pretty uncomfortable to carry (in my opinion) if they arent hanging on a wide thick belt. Anything smaller than 1 1/4" I dont fool with, 1 3/4" is better, but I agree completely that it is better to have on your body, just like I would agree that carrying a K frame Smith or a 5" 1911 is better than the Pico I carry. But the reality is, we make choices depending on what we think the threat level is. I rarely carry a full size handgun because I cant comfortably do it in the clothes I choose to wear, so in that point, I am choosing fashion or comfort over my safety.

A life long advocate of, "In a proper holster you can carry a proper gun," I have learned different. 9.5 hour days on my feet standing on a concrete slab provided the proper education. Heck I could hardly get in and out of the car at the end of work days. I can still carry big in a proper holster during my retired days. On work days I go plastic fantastic, IWB, with Perry suspenders. I tell the ladies new to shooting, "However you carry, the gun you enjoy shooting is NOT the gun you will enjoy carrying." And then we shoot a lot of different guns..

I'm pushing 56 and already I know where you're coming from Axe. I don't think I could stand all day on a job anymore. In addition, the smallest "push" into my hip from a holstered gun keeps me from walking right and the pain increases throughout the day. I'm thinking you're right about suspenders and IWB. And maybe Boge has us all beat with overalls and a chesty puller rig.
