Owned one Redhawk myself. Personally I never plan to fool with another. Can't argue that lots of people like them and those 45 Colt versions really tempt me. Were it not for the oversize 45 Colt chambers, the single hammer and trigger return spring, and the full contour grip frame I'd have one. Won't argue that the SRH is ugly. Doesn't matter. They work.

I now own 2 Alaskans... one in 454 & one in 480... both have replaced fiber optic sights... I shoot the 454 as well as any 4" gun, & the 480 is new ( bought it for myself for Christmas ) & I'm just starting to load for it... but expect the same accuracy level...
so... if the OP just doesn't like the looks of the Alaskan... that's fine & his right... but if he was worried about being able to shoot them accurately... he might be suprised how they shoot ( they do pack nice )... adding the fiber optic sights helped my old eyes, & I shoot my 454 Alaskan just as good as I shoot my 4" 357 GP-100, out to 50 yards...
BTW... I'm sure the longer barrel versions shoot great... I just can't get past the looks... & the Toklat with it's slab sided barrel isn't an improvement in the looks area, to my eyes... I find I prefer the looks of the chopped barrels better, but not much better than the SRH in factory trim...

For guns in this territory you really can't go wrong with either. I originally owned a 44 SRH Alaskan and sold it for one in 454 that I still have. Eventually I also picked up a 4" Redhawk in 45 Colt and had it converted to round butt and cut for moonclips. Both guns can be loaded to near the same performance with the Redhawk loaded to its true potential (50k psi). I really like the Redhawk and enjoy shooting it with light to heavy loads, some people don't like the trigger system but I eventually got comfortable with it. The Alaskans are great but if you don't like the short barrel a 454 Toklat will probably fit the bill nicely, weighs only 2-3oz more than the Alaskan. Some may say the SRH is ugly as it comes from Ruger but in general they are REALLY accurate. I smoothed over my Dad's 7.5" SRH in 44 and here are the results from it's 100yd sight in trip. If I were going to get another SRH it would probably end up looking like Whitworth's 500 with those sexy flutes on the barrel, similar barrel length as a Toklat. Fresh after the bead blasting and new sights, both can really improve the look and feel of a SRH: Slapped a color matched scoped on and ready to poke holes in some cardboard: If you look real hard you can see the targets. Not bad, three sets of 3 shot groups under 2.5" at 50 yards, first 3 shot group at 100yd was 2" edge to edge. I can't ever expect better than that for a factory gun, I didn't touch anything accuracy related, just an action job and cosmetic stuff.
