I remember seeing an article a while back that covers data well over the usual Blackhawk level +P and was intended for use in Ruger Redhawks only. I want to say it was by Brian Pierce but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Anyone out there have a copy or know where to find it?

Handloader 213 & 217 to start. There was a more recent article, but will have to look for it.
Been a lot of them through the years.

This article at Beartooth Bullets has some info.... Ruger's Big 45's
Excerpt.... How does 28.0gr of H-110 with a 310gr bullet at 1400fps sound! Or 30.0 of H-110 with a 265gr bullet at 1550 fps! I’ll sum it all up for you in one word...EXHILARATING, especially in a 50 oz handgun. And with groups of 1 ½” at 25 yds you just can’t beat it. I have been told that this gun can go higher yet, but why would you want to. If you can’t kill something with these loads you shouldn’t have gotten in an argument with it in the first place.

.... I have been told that this gun can go higher yet, but why would you want to.... I have been thinking on that. And havent come up with one good reason! Ya you know that 45 Colt Redhawk is a beast. I did the 454 conversion on my 4" by putting in a 454 cylinder out of a 454 SRH and by the time I was done I think I made 50 bucks on the deal. I got my hands on a donor gun cheap that came with some Buffalo Bore ammo. I swapped cylinders and sold the SRH with the 45 Colt cylinder and sold the ammo to someone else. Knowing what I know now, if it were going to cost any money I wouldn't do it again. The 45 Colt Redhawk is a factory 45 Colt that will handle 5 shot, 50,000psi 45 Colt loads if a guy really wants it. I've heard that "back in the day" there were a few smiths that reamed the cylinders to accept 454 rounds.

Brian Pearce wrote an article in Handloader #292 specifically for the .45Colt in the Redhawk.

Thanks for the help so far, I know JRH reamed them to 454 in the past as Tim Sundles wrote about that on his website.

Thanks for the help so far, I know JRH reamed them to 454 in the past as Tim Sundles wrote about that on his website. Andy Cannon was the first that I know who did that, and Jack Huntington has also done it -- I wrote about it in my Ruger book. I tested the first Redhawk Huntington performed that conversion to and after more than 25 years of use and abuse, it was as tight as a drum.

Max, what level loads do you run through the Redhawk? I've seen 50k psi data quoted in places but 454 is technically up to 65k.

Nobody really loads to 65,000 psi anymore that I know of, but I know some manufacturers that are loading up to around 60,000 psi and this Redhwak shrugged 'em off like water off a duck's back. And extraction was excellent.

The biggest problem when 454 to that max pressure is keeping the boolits from jumping crimp. But, I suppose 260gr at max pressure in a 7.5" RH would hold better than say a 350gr from a 4" RH.
