I tried a range of powders and bullets and eventually ended up at 20.0 grains of 2400 with the XTP 325. From a SRH 10", my notes say 1,249 f/s. I saw no need to go further...

Reviving this since I was unable to control myself when I saw my LGS had a 6.5" Bisley 480. Got everything I need to start loading. Going to compile a list of test loads from what I'm seeing around the forums and see what I can come up with.
Was also able to score some Speer 275's. Now I just need to get into casting so I can make some of them fancy HP's I see out there so often from you guys.

Am soo glad to see this pop back up. I need to put together the next batch with the Lehighs, a half grain up. Sidetracked by friend that is awaiting a CA Boomer and wants ammo. So the tumbler and loading blocks full of 44spec hullls right now. Will say, the molds for that big HP will drop'em a bit small for the BSBH. Maybe double PC'em. My thought and need to try too.

Man I tell you I love my 480 bisley more every day. Ordered a 440gr LFN from mountainmolds and now I think I need a 330gr plinker to conserve that lead pile.

Did everyone see that mold group buy going on down in the group buy section? I have the heavier version of this mold and it's a great bullet. Can't wait to get the lighter one.

Really should’ve taken notes on my lube recipe.
Just got back from the range, testing my 440gr 480 in the Super Blackhawk, thought I would max out before 23gr of h110 but I was wrong, no issues with primers or sticky extraction. So maybe 24-25 is max but that’s up there with the linebaugh isn’t it?
Also tested my first lube mix, knockoff of frywells. Stp moly grease Beeswax Paraffin And some green cheese wax from Some Irish cheddar I got the other day. But I took no measurements, need to next time
One quick pass with the boresnake, no leading at all. Boolits sized .476

I was able to get out and shoot my 6.5" 480 Bisley this weekend and, man, for the time being I think it might have just taken the 500JRH throne for my favorite revolver. I didn't have the chrono set up to use at the time so I don't have any velocity reports. I do have every target shot with notes, just no pictures currently will share them on a later post when I get the chance to go through and review. All casings were mostly clean and easy extraction. No primer deformations or any pressure signs what-so-ever in all the shots. Everything was loaded with a WLP primer, powders varied based of loads within this thread as well as some other loads I've seen on other forums. I did not push any loads, I tried to stay mid-range to what everyone was saying for their firearm and work on up from there if I found it necessary. All shots were fired from 25 yards except the very first was fired at 10 to make sure I would be on paper at 25. Loads were as followed Bullet | Powder | Powder Charge | Notes | Speer 325 gr JSP | 2400 | 23.5 | Very accurate, seemed reasonable in the recoil department. | Speer 325 gr JSP | 2400 | 24 | Accurate, but was inconsistent. | Speer 325 gr JSP | 2400 | 24.5 | Was able to group, but was inconsistent. Recoil was very noticeable. Unburnt Powder | Miss 340 gr PC | 2400 | 17 |
| Miss 340 gr PC | 2400 | 18 |
| Miss 340 gr PC | HS-6 | 14 | Very accurate tight group, low recoil | Miss 340 gr PC | HS-6 | 14.5 | Accurate, low recoil | Miss 340 gr PC | IMR4227 | 20 | Touched 4/5 bullets, had one flyer shooter error. Unburnt powder | Miss 340 gr PC | IMR4227 | 21 | Accurate and group well. Unburnt powder |
The Speer loads are the ones that I'm loading up for hunting season for whitetail. I wanted a jacketed bullet because I just don't have the full confidence in cast at this point being so new to the hand gun hunting, not shooting, world. I took these loads directly from Speer themselves and made a mid range load .5 from the lowest and highest loads for 2400. Why did I choose 2400? I wanted to stay out of the top end 296/h110 loads and have something a little more manageable and less punishing when shooting so I can also enjoy shooting my hunting loads for practice. I'm open to other suggestions along the lines of this thought process as well if anyone has any, just trying to save myself a little. 2400 at 17/18 gr didn't really impress me much so I don't remember what they did, though, all this is based off memory and that could serve me wrong. HS-6 is a long time favorite of multiple shooters on here for the 480 playing around, and I can see why. Both 14 and 14.5 shot great, but for me the 14 shot much better at least for me. I was mostly impressed with 4227 loads, they shot very well and were extremely manageable; but I noticed this load in particular always stayed a little higher (3-4") and to the left (2-3") of the rest of the loads. I would have to adjust and sight in for these specifically if I wanted to go this route. I have lots of other powders to try out as well if there are other suggestions as to what else to try. For the time being with what I've found is 23.5 of 2400 for the Speer is going to be my load and 14 of HS-6 will be my plinker under the Missouri bullets. Like I said, I'll post my terrible displays of accuracy later when I get a chance to take pictures of my "targets" (paper plats with a dot). As a side note, I really need to get into casting so I can play with all different shapes and sizes.

Kinda doubt that folks are using CCI 350's for the HS-6. LIkely most here know IMR4227 often leaves behind un-burnt powder. That is a powder that over the years, some go with a mag primer, some don't. Here, if used for a hunting load I do use the CCI 350 due to cold n wet weather and may help with un-burnt residue ? I tried some IMR4227 in an early batch with 325gr XTP's and may reviit that with a Speer bullet. Luck.

I typically use a Federal mag primer with HS-6. Federal is all we could get locally when stuff dried up years ago. I was lucky and bought a good supply. Im still using that supply

Finally got my .480 in hand and had a chance to chrono some loads yesterday. All loads from a 6.5" barreled Ruger Bisley in this chart. My gun really liked the 350-385 gr weight bullets and HS-6 was by far the most consistently accurate powder, followed by Unique. Its interesting that the 340 gr Lee and the 400 gr Lee boolit are traveling within 3 fps of each other when pushed by 14.5 gr of HS 6 .
