Am a fan of any n all shows depicting life in Alaska(except bush people). Had the bug yrs ago myself. Also have a love of fine steel, steel appropriate for the use, not necessarliy "big buck" steel. So, mentioned an interest in an Ulu to camp memeber. He said go look in cabinet behind us, on last trip he bought three, no real use for at his point in life. Wife n I just used it to slice/dice peppers/onions/garlic/zuchini/squash/herbs,etc.. to go in salad and with chicken to be grilled here. Am liking this blade. It's from "The Ulu Factory" w/chopping bowl. They have a bewildering array, ours a smallish handle, blade of @ 4" arc. Scary sharp, touched up once so far. LOVE it. My next favorite all-around blade a 6" Rapala standard birch handle with one inch cut off end. Re-Shaped,re-sharpened. Gives me the bigger handle, than the 4", less whispy awkward(to me) length. More like a Mora, Swedish,Finish blade.

We just got back from Alaska and Ulu knives were everywhere for sale in a WIDE range of prices. I make custom knives on the side so I am gonna try my hand at making one and see if its as useful as everybody in AK said they are.

Yup, pics/prices would be cool. Not flush with cash now(that darn Jason !) but a Damascus Ulu would be cooler than bleep ! Just wanted to put forth the idea that the blade style is more useful than you might think. With no thoughts towards it ever being a weapon, an all-around useful utlity blade emerged from that society. Give it some thought, and be careful ! Really though, the design doesn't need or require designer alloys to work. The blade off your Granpa's garden hoe would be fine.

Damascus Taste, Milwaukees Best budget ! But really, that broad flat blade would show very nicely ! Maybe even Colored case hardened steel ? Just pegged the needle on the cool meter !

Remember in one of the Conan movies, James Earle Jones(bad guy) asked our hero of the riddle of steel ? my Grandfather, born and raised in Sparta explained that to me when I was 5yrs old. Nothing fancy or poetic, keep it clean, keep it sharp.

The blade off your Granpa's garden hoe would be fine. The best ones are made from old circular skillsaw blades...Much different than the fat chrome plated ones they sell to tourists.

I have one ulu knife I picked up in Ketchikan many years ago on a rare chance to get up town off of the tug I was working on. Still have it but its just a touristy looking decorative thing like Paden mentions above.

cmh and bulasteve, let me get the first one made and I will let you know. I like working with stainless but could make a damascus one if I can find a big enough blank. I need to order a 1/8" thick 4" wide piece of 440C stock and should have enough to make one ulu from what is left. I've never used a old skill saw blade but I'd imagine it would make a tough blade if you could work it without over heating and loosing its temper. All the ones I saw in Alaska where hollow chisel ground just at the cutting edge.

To be clear, I'm not in the market for anything at the moment. Awaiting word on that 480 and just mailed a check to Barranti for a holster for it. It was my intent to spark an interest in an under-rated utility knife with field applications. Oh, and Ulus are a sharpen on one side kinda blade, not sure why, or how that came to be.

bulasteve, you said ulus are a sharpen on one side kind of blade and I said they are hollow chisel ground. I think we said the same thing in a different way. I know where you are coming from, I just got my .480 and now I am tooling up to cast my own after 30 years of reloading.
