i REEEEALLY wanted a No.1 in 450-400, but a tiny bit of common sense finally won out and I bought a .475 Linebaugh. Easier on the wallet, easier on the shoulder, and plenty powerful enough for anything I'm likely to shoot with it. If you want something different than a Ruger, get a Merkel K3 in 9,3x74R.... and get me one too. A .475 Linebaugh might be more sensible, but a .450/.400 can turn tree stumps into imaginary charging Bengal tigers.

CDNN has 9.3x74r Ruger 1-S for $799.99 right now. I saw an ad of theirs on a single shot rifle yahoo group.

That would be $999.99 for the Ruger on CDNN. Still that's a better price than most on auction sites. I picked one up for $899 on GB yesterday, NIB with gorgeous wood, which is becoming rare even on the No.1 these days.

I assume this is from their wholesale dealer price list.

Yeah, no way its being sold for that. I checked their site and its $999 retail. I notice too that Ruger is for this year at least only selling certain runs of this rifle thru Lipseys.

That 9.3x74R #1 was made several years ago. Last year though Lipsey's did a 9.3x62 and those are still available new. Lipseys is now the only distributor to get No. 1's. This year they're doing a .375 H&H No. 1H but I've had two of those for 25 years and mine are a lot heavier than Ruger claims. That .450/.400 though has the same barrel contour as used on the .375 but with a bigger hole so it has a better balance to it.

I love my 450-400 Number 1...if you get SHOOTING GALLERY you can see me shooting it at the Safari Rifle Challenge in Montana last year. I spent a bunch of time researching the best way to load some light cast bullet loads for it. Scared me so bad I bought a 45-70 Number 1.
