Hmmm... not my experience Max. The .500 S&W X frame remains the only handgun I have ever fired that bruised the palm of my hand. Bad enough that I could not shoot for a couple of weeks. Big colorful blob in the whole meaty part under the thumb. This was after just one cylinder of some pretty stout 500gr loads.

I know felt recoil is subjective, but all of my .50 cals have weighed in at right around 3-lbs with the exception of my SRH in .500 Linebaugh that weighed under 3-lbs. Granted, you can load 'em all down to "reasonable" levels which helps. Double-actions put all the force into the web of your hand, so I can feel your pain! I guess I'm just a little numb, that's all! LOL!

I've shot one of John Ross' half-lugged 5-inch custom .500s with heavy bullets, and I confess to really liking it…more so than my own longer barreled original. Great big chunk of lead going at a reasonable velocity was more like shooting a 45-70 vs. .450/400 out of the same style rifle. I even talked to Hamilton about cutting my gun down, but it's pretty much impossible…e.g. it would end up costing more than just buying one of the John Ross versions. I was pretty sure I was gong to pick up one of the Ross .500s, but given that I have the attention span of a gnat (makes me a good television producer…lousy human being, but a good television producer…LOL!) I sorta got sidetracked onto precision rifles. Would much rather launch something really hot out of a Blackhawk (or even a Redhawk) than the X-Frame or the N-Frame…

Michael I thought you were all caught up in in steel matches. And ARs. And small SD pistols. And.....and and and.

1894...you have the .500 I would love to buy one day. I have a 4" and "had" a 6" but it went down the road as the ports just didn't tame the recoil at all. I also have to agree with Whitworth in that the X-Frame recoils much less for me than a SA frame.
As to loads, I have standardized on the 350 grain bullet weight. For plinking the Berry's plated bullet is inexpensive and excellent accuracy with 18.0 grains of Unique. For the Speer, Hornady and Sierra 350s I use 20 grains. Have to check on the exact weight but also have a load with H110 that produces a fireball that can not only be see in daylight but can be felt on the face...
Also picked up one of the TC Encore barrels in .500 and it is fun to shoot.
Also on a reloading note, I had Lee make a Factory Crimp Die for the .500. It is the collet type like for their rifles not the straight walled pistol type.
