I am sure everything from this collection will be out of sight but I think it would still be cool to try and bid on a gun or two. Guess a guy needs to go to the sight and see how the auction for a big house like this works.

I read that Elmer was a savvy gun trader. Yep - he alludes to that in some of his writing. His correspondence in Gun Notes Vols. 1 and 2 provides a good window into that.

After all these years, I still don't have Gun Notes - neither volume.

Steve, You must not get out much.... Not as much as some people, that is for sure. I intended to buy both volumes, but never got around to it. Sigh...

Did Elmer make so much money from writing as to be able to amass such a awesome gun collection? Not to mention the hunts and cost of taxidermy? I know the cost of these very rare firearms is relative but even back in his day they still would have cost a small fortune! Elmer was an even better businessman than outdoorsman.

Found this little tidbit buried in the catalog, referring to one of Elmer's long guns:
James D. Julia Auctioneers complies with all federal laws and regulations (Please review our Ivory Position Statement): As per the President’s Executive Order of February 2014, this item with its ivory is legal to sell and buy provided there is an ESA “Antique Certification” document proving the age. You must purchase an ESA in order to take possession of the ivory. If you wish to acquire the ivory after you purchase this gun, you must hire John Sexton, who is an independent consultant with the appropriate qualifications to prepare ESA certifications accepted by government agencies. John’s address is: 1962 Portage Landing North, North Palm Beach, FL 33408. ESA statements prepared by John Sexton can be acquired for a cost of $1,500.00/each. It is the buyer’s responsibility to make payment to John for the ESA statements. The documents are prepared by John and not by James D. Julia Auctioneers. Once the ESA statement is prepared and provided to Julia’s, you can have the ivory mounts. Be sure to keep a copy of your ESA certificate for your records also.
First I've heard of ESA certificates. Wonder if this is legit?

Yea its complete BS but what is Julia to do as a business that wants to continue?

That ESA certification for the ivory is a federally approved racket handed down by the emperor himself. There is no law requiring it, just an executive order.
