I just became aware that the old forum may be infected. Essentially, thousands of phpbb forums have been high-jacked in recent weeks (ie, the cause of it failing). What I wasn't aware of is that malware may be installed on the scripts and could potentially impact your PC. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT LOGGING INTO THE OLD FORUM!!! I'd rather lose the threads than have folks get a virus. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll clear my bookmarks, so I don't accidentally click on it.

Hey Lee,
I just noticed under your name on your posts it says "30 streaker". Others members on other posts say things like "240 incinerator". Seems humorous but I gotta ask what this is all about.

I got a few emails from folks suggesting we do something different for post rankings. Decided to use wildcats I've done over the years. -Lee www.singleactions.com

This is probably a dumb question, but I'm not real knowledgeable on computer viruses. Would you have to log in under your user name to get it, or would simply looking at the website infect your computer?

Most likely, just going there would be a problem whether you're logged in or not.
These hacker/virus idiots should be dealt with extreme prejudice. They are definitely on my lower levels of scum list.
I'm going to proceed with the archiving (see post in "Perhaps"). We just need to keep each other posted if something "odd" happens.

Gents,
Please be aware that these hackers have become much more sophisticated in the last few years. They can hijack a link (such as our old board index links to each sub board) on an otherwise normal site that allows them to exploit known bugs in the software on your systems and download worms, trojans or bots that you won't see. They can embed their malicious code in binary files such as video clips, in the html for the website, and in the database. The key is you might not ever see a difference in your PC's performance, but could be passing your account login and password for anything you log onto back to these guys. Used to be that your PC performance would degrade to the point that you suspected something but that's not always the case now. Soooo, please be very careful visiting the old site since it hasn't been cleaned yet.
Terry

I am having trouble deciding whether to continue with this project or not. I have fair confidence in my anti-virus software and am inclined to take the chance but, NOT if the end result is going to be useless. Are we creating something that folks will really want to access and be comfortable with, or..... WHAT Terry... You say the site hasn't been cleaned yet. Are you implying that, at some time, it WILL be cleaned ?

Wish I could say that it will be, but it's unlikely because you'd need to dump the sql onto an isolated system and crawl through the code, removing the malicious content. Tedious and expensive. The guys in my office that do this on the side start at $75/hr and have the equipment to do it with. If you visit the old site, please make sure that your ant-virus software is updated and keep in mind that they are often behind the curve because of the number of new threats. One thing to watch for is that users on different phpbb3now boards were automatically forwarded to infected servers without clicking links.

Shakey,
The safest way to archive everything is to put it all on a CD or exterior media,....don't store it on your puter. Once it's stored there you can scan the entire contents for a virus, etc before you open anything.
The problem is you have to get on the site to pull it off. If you've got up to date virus protection you might be ok,....and you might not.
I have to say this doesn't suprise me in the least though,....when we started seeing Chinese,....I figured something was wrong. Could've been a co-ink-e-dink too I guess.

It really goes against the grain to let the bastards win but, I guess this is one of those discretion/valor deals. So, I am backing off.
Cucuy, If you are determined to see this thing through, I have the first 6 pages of Reloading & Wildcats that I can send you. Or, should I just delete it?
