One day last week I was up the road at the other farm when the owner asked me if I wanted some old wooden dynamite boxes. It seems when they bought the farm there was a small shack an old guy lived in and he had been a powder monkey. Apparently the current owner saved the old wooden boxes Marked "Giant" on the outside and stacked them behind a bunch of lumber. We came across them the other day and I thought they were pretty cool so I brought one home. These are wooden boxes with faded stenciling on the sides and the corners are not dovetailed but interlocked together without nails etc. I assume this is so if there is "an event" the sides would fall out rather than shatter and turn into a bunch of flying splinters.
I tapped the corner joints back together and thought it would be neat in the reloading room. If any of you have any desire to have one of these for say $15 a piece plus the shipping, I'll bring them back home, clean out the cobwebs and tighten the corners back up as best I can then ship them out to you. The $15 would go straight to the older couple who owns the farm and I'd do the clean up and boxing them up for free. Some of them have some insect damage in the bottom boards and the lettering is faint but it is there on most of the boxes. There are only 6-7 boxes so first come first served on anyone wanting one.
Let me know if there is any interest and I'll wait to see what you guys say before I go to the work of cleaning them up and putting them back together.
Robb

Well guys, the ice and snow has kept the pump trucks in the garage so I was able to dig those old dynamite boxes out and see what shape they were in. After wiping them off and looking at them it looks like there are 5 that are fairly solid. Here are a couple of pictures so you can see if you want to spend the money on them and their shipping. As you can see, there is some insect damage and the paint is faded but I still think the construction which I assume is to allow the sides to fall out rather than shatter in case there is an "event" is the neatest part. I think there were about 5 guys interested so if you did say you wanted one and still do after see the pictures, I'll check on the best way to box one up for shipping. Let me know. Robb

Robb.... beautiful boxes and worth every penny. Note on construction: that's how they did things in those days. Dynamite wouldn't care a buckwheat fart whether the corners of a wood box were mortised, nailed, screwed, or glued. The big deal is to not store dynamite in direct contact with metal. Setting aside static electricity for a moment, I would not store firearms in dynamite container, as any residual acid might corrode the fine steel. Years ago I cut dynamite cartridges with carbon steel knives. Instant rust, unless washed immediately, often impossible. Switched to stainless. Dynamite also polishes brass in a hurry. However, must immediately wash brass. David Bradshaw

Thanks for the history correction David. I had just done the problematic "Assume" thing when I saw the corner construction. While these 5 boxes are fairly solid, most of the boxes had some pretty extensive insect damage or rot so they will go on the burn pile. I could probably disassemble them and come up with one more box but not sure it is worth the effort.

Robb, my father in law built a secretary desk out of some old boxes like that years ago. It was pretty neat.

Check out what furniture people use to kill wood borers such as powder post beetles, worms, etc. Wood can be neutralized, stabilized, even impregnated. You won't find these boxes thrown out car windows like chicken wrappers. Save 'em. David Bradshaw
