Had an AWA on consignment at the local gun shop. Got a call from the dealer that a guy was there wanting to trade for it. I asked what he had and the dealer said it was a Ruger 357 BH. He said it was in prity good shape with a little muzzle ware and aftermarket grips with a chip knocked out of it. I went to the store and it turned out to be a 3 screw(no box or paperwork)and without the original grips. I checked it out and something looked unusual when I looked at the barrel. I asked the guy what he had in mind. He said he would give the BH and $225. I himed and hawed and squirmed a little ;D and of took the trade in a heartbeat. I payed the dealer his $25 consignment fee. After the guy had done the check with the TBI and left with his gun, I told Mike to hand me his bore light and what I thought I had seen was right. It was an 8 grove barrel. Checked the numbers when I got home and it's a 1973 gun. Now for my question. About how many 8 grove barrels did they make. I'm thinking this one is going to stay the way it is(MINUS THESE GRIPS). The action is smooth and when I checked the trigger with a poundage gage, it measured at 2 3/4 lbs three times in a row.

The 6 groove barrels were used from '55 to mid '60. Eight groove barrels then became the norm. All of the "protected sight" Old Model .357's have 8 groove barrels, all 200,000 of them.....
The 8 groove, 10 inch .357 Flattops are the "scarce" version, with less than 200 being made with some estimates as low as 50 made.
Enjoy your Old Model!

Didn't know they were all 8 groove. Guess it might be the next prodject gun. It depends on which of my OM 357's shoots the best, this one or a reblued flattop. Bill
