Hey all,
I just received my new 5-shot 480 Ruger from Jack (has to go back for a couple little tweaks before I post pics... it is suhweeeeet though) and the chambers are cut for the 480 Ruger, but cylinder is long enough to have been cut for 475 Linebaugh length cartridges.
I just designed a 375gr gas checked bore riding secant bullet on the Mountain Molds website that allows for more case capacity in the Ruger brass and puts more of the bullet nose out near the front of the cylinder and closer to the forcing cone.
My questions are... have any of you designed your own bullets and had Mountain Molds or any other mold companies cut you custom molds? Any preference in maker? Any stability/accuracy concerns about only having .385" inside the case and .480" nose to crimp length?
I've never cast a round ball, let alone a pistol bullet, but I was hoping to utilize the full length of the chambers and reduce the pressure inside the case by freeing up a little more room for the H110 powder I'll be using.
Any info is appreciated!
Thank You,
Stump

I used that website to design a new bullet, back when I was going to build a modern 577 Snider, but that project never came to fruitation... my local retired tool & die buddy that does most of my firearms machining, cuts his own bullet molds all the time... some seem to find their way to me...
like the OP, I've not cast anything myself yet ( I inherited all my FIL's casting stuff, & been collecting molds over the years, with intention of "getting going" just can't seem to find the time... on guns I shoot a lot, it just seems so easy to buy a box of 500 already cast...
I do have several interesting molds... a pair of 6 cavity molds my buddy made for my 22 magnum centerfire, & my 257 special, & many more, up to a 2 cavity 416 GC & a 375 ish grain 2 cavity .502 mold for my 50 caliber handguns...I think there's also a custom mold floating around here somewhere for my 50-70 Gov. also

Over on the castboolits forum, there are several custom designs, and mold orders. I have received several excellent designs made by a few folks who build molds. Mihec makes some BEAUTIFUL brass molds that have excellent options. The only downside to using one of those mold builders is the waiting time for a new mold. Many of us are still on a long list for a couple of boolits that the wait has been over two years now. But, many designs have been done in under a year.

Veral Smith at Lead Bullet Technology ( www.lbtmoulds.com/ ) builds molds to customer specs. as a matter of routine. The quality is well known and the prices are reasonable.

Hey all, reduce the pressure inside the case by freeing up a little more room for the H110 powder I'll be using. Any info is appreciated! Thank You, Stump LBT has made their name doing that type of design. I understand the want to mess with it but I personally wouldn't reinvent the wheel. On the freeing up space for 110, don't do too much or you could possibly run into the issue of decreasing the load too much which is a problem with 110/296. Have fun with it and don't forget that HS6 is your friend with the 475/480

My questions are... have any of you designed your own bullets and had Mountain Molds or any other mold companies cut you custom molds? Any preference in maker? I've only commissioned one custom so far. The Mountain Mold design application wouldn't do exactly what I wanted, so I drew up my design the old fashioned way. Glad I did, as I got the exact spec's and results I was looking for. I went with Accurate Moulds (http://www.accuratemolds.com/) and Tom did a very nice job, with an impressively quick turn around. I'm not currently set up to cast, so I sent the mould to Montana Bullet Works. Dave made me a lifetime supply, and liked the bullet enough to add it to his catalog. Veral Smith at Lead Bullet Technology ( www.lbtmoulds.com/ ) builds molds to customer specs. as a matter of routine. The quality is well known and the prices are reasonable. Veral is reputed to make a fine mould, but I chose Accurate because Veral's site makes the following statement:

I fooled with trying to design some molds. The last one I wanted was a two year wait from lee. Then when it got here the nose was not what it was supposed to be. Actually I had forgotten about the order along with forgetting what my original intentions were for it. None the less it shoots exceptionally well in the 32-20 buckeye along with a few other 30/32 guns. A medium weight plain base is all but non existant in this bore size that is a plain base. I myself refuse to get involved in the long wait group buys. Though I will say they are worth it and I have been tempted several times. Once one does a bit of looking around there are options that are as good and sometimes better than a group buy. However you will more than likely pay a few more frog skins. Heck in two years I forget what I was playing with and could have traded it off by then as well. I myself have three molds on the back burner now that could be here in less than 30 days. My mad money went to some fishing gear that needed replaced. Then have the oppertunity to go to a rifle match with a couple of young fellows on the Olympic team. Lord knows the have to like me as it surely isn't because of my shooting ability. Lol. Not everyday I get the chance to run with two shooters of this caliber. So to get rifle and ammo ready for this match there goes the last of my mad money.
Keep this thread up to date on your design. As I am interested in the 475/480 stuff. Jeff

Light for caliber and a lot of lead out of the case are not a good combination.

Anymore I just use one mold maker Tom at accurate molds.com he has a few bullets in his catalog and if you don't see what you like what you see tell will help design what you want. I recently designed a 405gt bullet for my bfr it is the 48-405E and I have been very happy with it and plan on taking with me to sack a little piggy next month

Tom at accurate molds.com top shelf molds if he doesn't already have a design you like he can help you design one. I just designed the 48-405E and I'm very pleased with it

Lots of good stuff!!! Still need to take the time to really sit down and absorb it all and check out the links, but THANK YOU for all the information!!! If I go for it, I'll post an update. As to 375gr's in the .480, I didn't thing that was a light for caliber bullet. I suddenly feel inadequate now.

I've had two done by Accurate Molds. One was a copy of an old 32-40 bullet and the other was a heavy bore-rider for my 375 Ruger. Both molds were top quality. I've held and used a mold from Mountain Molds and it was high quality as well. I just dislike messing with the design program on Mountain Molds and prefer sending a dimensioned drawing to Accurate.

This thread is really making me scratch my head. I used mountain molds to design a 500gr WFN type .512"
But a couple years before that I did a 405gr WFN for the 50AE that Hotch made for me. But for the life of me I have no recollection of how I drew it up or anything like that. ??

Go to Mountain Molds web site. It is real easy if you pay attention to the obvious and have a good knowledge of what your new bullet should end up like. I have at least a dozen molds I designed my self on Dan,s site and if I can do it, anyone can. It is very rewarding as well. Kind of like tying your own flies to fish with.
