Is this your business, Building rifles? Do you and your dad build custom rifles for others and how can someone contact you for discussing a build? Thank you for the resume, very impressive skills, and not to mention the super broad range of knowledge that pertains to building everything on a rifle. I do not know many people who go as far as oil hardening there own parts. Most people sub that out to job shops. I once worked at an iron shop where Cyanide or oil was not uncommon to use to harden steel. I like how you took the time to explain why you chose to do certain things the way you do them. For instance,I am shocked at the lack of information on Stainless steel. I try to explain to people it has its place, but its not for every where. I get lots of questions then. I did not know that chromoly gouged less than stainless...food for thought on next rifle. I was going to have my next rifle built with blued Carbon steel as it does not gouge like stainkless and aluminum, and it is so forgiving when working with it. I think that if I had to take one thing out of the build that still sticks out to me the most is probably when you ground the end mill shank down so you could mill the bolt lug slots and then to come in on a angle, using the head of mill, and just kissing the corners to allow the lugs to start to turn into the slot. That is where my patience was done. My hat goes off for you and your dad. Awesome thread. Very thorough. You need to have this published like that loose leaf panphlet that Joghn L. Hinnant wrote.... "The complete illustrated guide to Precision Rifle Barrel Fitting" Gota sale this right next to his pamphlet...great stuff.

We don't hold an FFL and don't do gunsmithing as a business. It's just a hobby....we only build them for ourselves. Did you have the last Winter match? Or was the weather totally uncooperative?

I spoke with Jay Young and decided on a round inlet for my rail (shown on the right). He claims there's no performance difference between V's or O-sleeves. Both have set records. But he says many of the top unlimited shooters are switching to round inlets. That's enough for me to go that route. He'll also supply the delrin sleeve for my 1.450" Lederers. Sounds like it'll be another month or two. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Did you have the last Winter match? Or was the weather totally uncooperative? Charles - I shot the last 200 yard Winter league Saturday. Was jet lagged and not well rested. Plus the conditions were pretty tough. Not big wind, but there was a constant swirling action. Very switchy; the flags just wouldn't hold for more than 5 - 10 seconds. I finished 12 out of 15. But luckily, the Winter League takes the best 3 out of 4 match results. I did well in the first three legs. That was good enough to get me 4th place overall for the series. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Now that is way cool getting 4th in Overall. I am looking forward to you using your own Swaged Bullets and with the experience you now have under your belt, I believe there is going to be even higher standings for you. Congratulations on the fine Overall.

If it takes 2 more months, before the rail is done, will that be cutting it a little close on a fall league? Sounds like you will be busy this summer working on that rifle, and swaging hopefully swaging your bullets.

Sounds like you will be busy this summer working on that rifle, and swaging hopefully swaging your bullets. Charles Charles – from what I hear, he’s close on my dies. Hopefully I’ll be swaging them this spring. In the meantime, I’m giving up nothing with Bart Sauter’s 112 gr X-Outs. He uses Hines jackets on Ulrich dies...the same as I use for my 6mm’s and eventually 30-cal. There isn’t a series in which I can shoot the rail. There are however some matches on the east coast that schedule the unlimiteds. Rails are pretty rare and to field the class takes some doing. But if things come together, I may take it to the 4-gun event in Roanoke, VA this fall. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Light Varmint 6 PPC Build _________________________________ Originally I intended to switch .30 Stingray and 6 PPC barrels on my action. But the Stingray is shooting well and I don’t want to mess with it. The rifle is now a dedicated 13.5# score rig. Still, I want to compete in group and have a sizeable investment in 6mm dies (not to mention 8,000 bullets). Along with the rail project, I decided to build another PPC. Dad has a Martin action we almost used, except it won’t make LV 10.5#. Plus he’s finally going to barrel it for himself. We could fabricate a lighter action, but in the interest of time I purchased a BAT. Chris Harris at Bullet Central had a BAT DS with all the features I wanted: • Polished stainless (as opposed to Melonite) • Two lug, coned face bolt • Left hand bolt • Right loading port • Left ejector port • Diamond fluting to lower weight • Two trigger hangers that’ll position sear at 0, 10, 20, or 30 thousandths BAT makes a 3-lug receiver with shorter bolt lift (60 degrees vs. the 2-lug's 90). They cycle a hair faster, but with a less cocking cam, the lift is harder. BAT eased this by fitting a roller bearing in the cocking piece. That feature is now used on the 2-lug DS. They cycle like a dream. I plan on chambering a Lederer light varmint blank for it this weekend (lower blank in the below photo. BTW, if you like collecting barrels, benchrest is the sport for you): I’ll finish it off with a Bix ‘N Andy trigger, Scoville carbon fiber stock, and March 48X scope. More to come. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shot at a time"

This is really intriguing to learn so much about the rail project. And we are faced with yet another build for a new 6mm. Doesn't get any better. The bat action is very impressive with the 60 degree lift, and roller bearings. I like the cool factor of the diamond flutes. I agree with you 100% on the Bart's Bullets they have proven themselves with you. I just think that it is so awesome to swage your own bullets especially since you did it so well. BTW I did not realize that you had 8000 of the 6mm. This is going to be a lot of fun watching another build. Decided on a color for the stock yet?

One of those barrels pictured seems to be a tad bit larger than the rest...

Great shooting over your winter league there Lee!
I'll continue to check in on your progress, certainly looks like you are doing a heck of a job with ......... well...... everything! Shooting, building, swaging! Awesome, Congrats!
I continue to improve my dies and hope to one day make a set that is capable of competing, I'll keep working at it. At the moment my personal bullet swaging is geared towards high volume varmint shooting out here in the NW with the spring ground squirrels coming out any day now. I go threw about 5,000 rounds or more in 4-5 day trip, mostly 50-70 grain 22 cal bullets made from 22lr brass, makes for cheap fun shooting.
Good shooting and swage on!

Wait.... I recognize that brake! You picked up a 50 a while back as I recall! Now that is the ultimate bullet to swage! Your going to have to lengthen your range for that one BT
