EMT = Electrical Mechanical Tubing. At least in this story that is what was meant.
Clinkers are what we called a mass of coal, ash, etc, that would grow inside the boiler.
The "Blast Technicians" were contractors that traveled around the USA having fun blowing stuff up. It wasn't highly technical from what I observed. Simply duct tape one stick of explosive to the tubing. Insert the blasting cap, wire it up, squirt the fuel into the charge & hand feed it into the Boiler as close to the clinker as possible. Then wire up the ignition device & send some electricity down the wires = BOOM!
My job was to observe & report to the Control Room.
Smaller clinkers were usually removed with 12 gauge shotguns.
