I'll try this here I dont think the folks over on the Colt forum like you modifying Colts. I have a SAA that I have been thinking about getting refinished into a duo tone. I want to have everything polished bright with the cylinder frame loading gate, and both pieces of the grip frame nickle and the rest blued. I would have a work order from Colt showing they did the work. That is if they will. I wont do it unless they will. If Colt does it, will it not harm the value of the gun? Does anyone here have a gun like this and if you do pictures please? It's a 3 rd Gen. gun that was used for CASS and then rescued.

From a collectors point of view, anyalteration from the original factory configuration reduces the value of the gun. No matter who does it. From a shooters point of view, it's your gun, do what you want with it to make it suit you. As you said it's already been abused in CASS matches, so the collectors value is nil.
Personally I don't care for the pinto look, but I've got a couple Rugers with bare grip frames and I don't worry about it. They are tools to me. You want nickle and blue ... do it.
As you can tell, I'm not a collector.

It will still be a refinish, even if the factory does it. However, it's your sixgun and if that's what you want, go for it. Life's too short to worry about what the collectors think.

This is somewhat like the gun you are describing. Great Western 22. Backstrap and hammer are likely chrome. I like the look - its flashy in a tasteful way. This gun is in the shop now getting everything reblued except whats chromed now.

sackpeterson,
I kinda like that dark blue, plum, chrome look. Very interesting.

I have a TLA .44 Magnum Number 5 that the former owner had partially nickeled (grip frame & loading gate). He thought something was wrong when the parts started turning plum. Obviously it would have been better if the guy had not altered the gun, but I like the nickel grip frame. The nickel loading gate not so much, stands out too starkly in my opinion.

I would have also done the cylinder frame had it been me doing it. That picture makes me kind of itchy.

I like the plum too, but theyre were a few imperfections on this one that were bugging me. I was hoping it would plum up again after reblue.

I guess if it wont matter that Colt does it, I could go after a fine matte finish on both blue and nickle. After all this old aluminum and steel Colt Scout 22 is what moved me to begin with.

Rep, if it were mine I wouldn't do it, but it's your gun & it should please YOU not someone else. If Colt will do it & you want it go for it. Frank

I know at leats in the shooting and collecting circles I run in, if it's authenticated by factory letter it doesn't hurt the value with us one bit

I don't see what the big deal is anyway. Didn't you say it's a 3rd gen gun. It's no big deal. If you want it redone, do it. Bill
