"High volume" hog hunting is, I have to admit, somewhat addicting. When the pigs are really running and shooting opportunities abound, you get to where you are almost haunted by the THWOP of the bullet striking and NEED to hear it. I get twitchy and nervous driving past the ranch gate on the way home from work.
Still, while eradication is a futile goal, it is a needed effort.

how big are the hogs, on average? i've always wondered about using my AR for hogs; i wasn't sure how even the heavy .223s would handle a boar's gristle plate. maybe you should mount a bayonet, just in case... I have shot a truck load of white tails in Texas with an AR. I think people underestimate their abilities. Think of all the different bullets that are available today and it may change your mind. For your consideration, a laminated steel lock shot with a standard Remington softpoint: I don't think the gristle plate of even the largest boar would hold up better. Think shot placement, shot placement, shot placement and then look closely at a pig's rather unusual anatomy: The pic is a little blurry having been blown up from an avatar sized pic but hopefully you can see the heart is very low in the chest cavity and the lungs are lower than most suspect. The spine runs way under the top line as well. With just a little brush or grass, all of these can be covered and is one reason I favor the brain shot. The brain is right in the ear hole and is approximately a baseball sized target. That should pose not much problem for a rifle nor for a pistol close in.

I hate to turn this toward a 'black and tacticool' discussion,...but it sounds like this is one place a suppressor may be warranted. Especially with that AR-10.
(Assuming of course you could get far enough away to wash out the remaining sound to a dull note and close enough to be effective)

Priest, I actually have come recipes for sub sonic loads in my .458 SOCOM using up to 500gr bullets. Now that would be a good gun for a supressor! ;D
