The #5 grip frame works fire for up to 44 magnum loads. When you get up into the realm of the heavy loaded +P+ 44 mags and heavy 45's and beyond you really need a bit more to hang onto IMO....

We're falling back into the buying underwear for someone we have never seen again aren't we? While the Ruger Bisley is standard enough (unless you are having custom grips made) Just from reading here I understand that all #5 grip frames are not quite the same... Then the personal preferences are so diverse too.. The old XR3 gets a pretty much standard slam on the heavy kickers... While I think it is a pretty good sign when the big kicker builders point us all hard to the Bisley, the guys here are spread across the board with XR3-Red, Bisley, and EK liked the SBH dragoon... I think ole Bluecow needs to get to the range with a #5 and see for himself...

It's pretty much as Axehandle said; Kind of a personal fit issue. For myself, I like the Bisley grip frame for heavy loads ( this is the Ruger Bisley). For standard loads I really like the original Colt grip frame. Frank

I cannot speak for all of the #5 grip frames but the one on the TLA Improved #5 for me, is recoil proof and fits my hand just like it was made for it. I wish every gun I have had that exact same grip on it. It falls into my hand just like it was supposed to be there all along. I cannot like it enough. BB

A full set of teeth too! ;D C'mon, Axe! We all know those are dentures, not original equipment. ;D Lots of good advice you gave above, though. I have found grip frames to be as individual fit an item as boots. What feels good to me might be awful to you and vice versa. Same applies to the grip panels, or stocks if you prefer, as well. Factory Ruger grips don't do much for me. The few aftermarket grips I've held were worlds better. Trial and error is often the only way to determine what works best for you. I do think the Bisley is much more accomodating to larger hands, however.

I've never handled an #5 but can say that the panels fitted to a bisley make a huge difference. I have Fishpaw Dall's on my Nimrod .500. These are about .05 wider that the frame at the top and just a little narrower than standard Rugers at the bottom. These fit my hand soooo much better than the standard Ruger panels on my Accusport .44 Bisley.
I'd try different panels on a Bisley before giving up on it.

I agree with Axe. This question isd like asking us to buy you underbritches. It's like Bisley hammers, personal preference

Heck Bluecow, there's nothing wrong with finding out what others like. If you are lucky enough to know people with the different grip shapes & can shoot them for yourself that'd be a great way to decide what fits you. Frank

One way to look at it, for some: the #5 is like a Ruger Bisley, except you can sling your pinkie under the bottom of a #5.

I have had several Ruger 44s over the years and my current Bisley is by far my favorite.
While I never really had any problems with the dragoon gripframes with standard loads, heavy loads of H110 would sometimes ding my middle knuckle something fierce.
The Bisley is much more comfortable with heavy loads and my knuckles don't get rapped on.
