I had this done a few months ago by James Kobe. Great smith to work with. Really need to find something better than a screw driver to hold it up.

A thing of beauty. I'm trying to identify the action though... Ruger?

Very nice...
I added an older unfired Rem 700 to my collection in 35 Whelen over the winter... still trying to put stuff together to develop some handloads for it

For folks familiar with the 35whelen, is it silly to have one with a shorter barrel, say 20"-22"? I've found a company selling Bergara Encore barrels in 35Whelen for a good price. They're 24", but I'd like something shorter. The plan was to work up a load using a heavy-ish bullet for hunting in the mountains where the shots are short, but fast (there's a deer! Choot it, choot it!). I don't expect shots to go over 100yds (the last few deer I've shot have all been below 50yds).
Will I lose a lot performance-wise?
Chris

My favorite Whelen is tweaked by me original tang Ruger RS 22" and will run 225 gr Barnes TSX's at 2700 fps so that is where I end as I really am not one of the "shorter brush conditions" tripe. I have one that is 25" but it is a pre-war JP Sauer octagon to round integrally ribbed rebore of a 30-06 that I run easy due to age/action so at the 22" velocity levels. Stick with 22" IMO though anything I have shot with the Whelen would have never known the difference between a 2300 fps MV or a 2800 one. A couple of 225 gr TSX 2700 fps victims.
