Fermin I just wanted to thank you. You got me to thinking about my .17s again and I had to go and fondle them. Then I remembered... I have a 1/2 finished stock for a model 96 I converted to .17HMR!
I had gotten an inletted rough blank (it was square all over brother!) a few years ago and had put it up in a cabinet. Well this thread got me wanting to shoot it again, so I am now about 90% finished. Maybe I'll post a pic or two when it's all done.

Well Buddy, I will post 2 pics. One before and one after. The before pic is after all the initial shaping and before final filing. Luckily the action was square and true, though rough as heck. It took quite a bit or work to get right before installing a pillar and bedding. As you might be able to tell from the very poor fit of the action in the before pic, this 'roughed out' stock was rough! The after is not the finished product. Just after about 6 coats of Tru Oil. I still have that many more to do I imagine. I dare anyone to look at the before pic and tell me that you can see how much grain is going pop out of that blank. I sure didn't know it! I will post another pic after I get the action mounted, but that has to wait until the finish is all done and sits up a while. And I know already... a lever action isn't supposed to have a big cheek piece (or a Schnabel tip) like that, but I needed it to get my head in the right position for the scope. And yes I have to use a scope! Before: After:

Markbo - I love it when the grain pops as you start applying the finish. Did you use any stain pre true oil or did the true oil bring out all that stripe? Side note on true oil. Years ago I remember reading an article about mixing some wd-40 with the true oil and doing a hand rubbed finish. Never tried it. I wonder how that really comes out.

Thank you I appreciate that. I thought I might catch some guff about that Schnabel, but I thought it would look good. I had to trim down the forend a lot... it started out waaaay thick.
Buck I did not use any other stain or product. I wet sanded down to about 500grt wet dry to fill all the pores and immediately went to very light hand rubbed coats of Tru Oil. I have heard of WD40 and even Armor All being used, but they contain ingredients that can be detrimental to the long term strength of an oil finish.
All I have in the Tru-Oil is about 20% mineral spirits to thin it and hasten drying time. Now that I have about 7 or 8 coats on it I will go to pure Tru Oil for probably just 2 or 3 more coats then let it sit up for several days. It got unexpectedly cool here so the drying time in between coats is extended.
ETA: I forgot to mention... in addition to the Cheek piece and schnabel no-no's, it also has a right hand palm swell. ;D

It looks great you would never know there was that much figure in the wood just looking at it before the true oil. I built a Dixie Gun Works Pennsylvania style muzzle loader kit 20 some odd years ago and all the while I was putting it together I was expecting a plane jane looking stock. When the linseed oil hit it I was pleasantly surprised. almost looked like an old maple tiger striped stock when I was done. Some times you just get lucky. Yours looks great!

Just a couple more pics. It is almost done. I have 2 more coats of Tru-Oil to put on to take care of the last little bits of 'not perfect' I can see, but this is what it is going to look like finished: Look close and you'll see the palm swell I sanded into that pistol grip. Don't look too close though or you'll see a couple spots that I am not finished with!

That is a great looking 17 lever. I shoot a Ruger 77/17 in the HMR. It started life as a 22 Mag and I added a Green Mountain barrel in 17 HMR. It is a fine shooting gun and is usually leaned near the front door at home for the all the pests rural Oklahoma offers from gophers in the yard to armadillos to the occasional coyote passing through.

Had a CZ452 Varmint in 17hmr w/a Weaver 6-24x42 onnit. Boringly accurate. Itty-bitty, one-hole groups at 50yds. I'm way, WAY too ADD to punch paper & had no opportunities to set up on some groundhogs or crow with it. Don't keep what I don't shoot & sent 'er down the road.
Fun round & I liked it, but just didn't have a use for it.
