Have a friends H&R 922. It has 6 digit serial # w/wood grips 6" barrel. Has gold front blade. Its DA only. Did H&R make a 922 DA only or did someone fiddle with this thing

bud, According the Jim Hauff, H&R Collector, "The H&R Model 922 is a 9 shot, .22lr, solid frame, PULL-pin cylinder release DA/SA revolver. The Model 922 was introduced around 1925"
This suggests that your hunch is correct. The gun most likely has been "fiddled with"

Thanks Bob....it just didn't feel right. Someone must have done a number on those notches as you can feel nothing when you pull the hammer back ever so slowly.

I have a 923 with the screw type hammer pin. Many years ago, the single-action didn't feel right, so I pulled the old girl apart and discovered that the single action notch on the hammer had fractured, and most of it was missing. Your 922 may have had a similar issue, or perhaps it simple wasn't reassembled correctly sometime in it's past. A missing single action sear spring would cause this too.

Hey Bud, I have fixed many of these and the first thing to check here (and the easiest) is the sear(the little hangy thing behind the trigger in the trigger guard) and the sear spring. If it pops foward by it's self when you cock it but will not hold the hammer than it is a sear tip or hammer notch. If it does not move on it's own hold the hammer back and pull the sear foward with a small penknife or somesuch. lower hammer on it when pulled foward. If that holds it you are only looking at a sear spring and any SMALL one can be used . I favor the ones out of BIC lighters.

Bud you may want to take it apart first and see what kind of spring it was. MOST are coils and any small coil with a little power will work . Some have leaf springs and are a little stranger but do-able. When you work on these you quickly come to the conclusion that they may have never made 2 the same way. Old valve stems also have cool little coils in them. ;D

Needsmostuff....you are one handy fellow to have around. Hope you don't mind if I pick yer brain from time to time. I've always been an H&R and IJ fan not to mention HS revolvers. Do you know Paco Kelly ? He lives in Tucson too.

Handy ,nah. Just nosey enough to take things apart and lucky enough to SOMETIMES git them back together. Seen a lot of Paco's writings on the interweb but never meet the man. But the Tucson gun world is not that large and you never know who your standing next to at the gun store. Who knows.

A friend of mine asked me to try to figure out what is wrong with his now DAO-only H&R 922. I know this is an old thread. I came across it while trying to find information on my friend's gun. Can someone tell me how to capture the mainspring so it can be removed? It has the Rice grip frame. Just checking before I try to remove the hammer under spring pressure. Thanks

As I have no experience with that grip shape I can only guess. All the coil hammer springs on H&Rs I have worked on have had a hole in the hammer strut just below the plate that stops the spring when you cock it. Hard to tell from that picture but that may be what that little V is for. hold the hammer back and see if a hole lines up with the little V. If so stick a bent paperclip thru it and release hammer. Spring will be captured. In the picture I do not see the little nub of the sear sticking out behind the trigger . If that is not there or is collapsed and un- sprung there will not be any single action so look there first.
