Ohh! Ahh! ;D I got my hands on a Les Baer 45 auto on a lightweight frame today. Its a used gun so as soon as the madness at the shop subsides a bit I will give it a try. I may have to own that 45, it looks like a dandy....

Is it one of the older aluminum guns he made on Caspian frames or something else? I think Les had issues with the aluminum Caspian framed guns from a durability standpoint, I cant remember if they cracked or just didnt hold together for reliability and/or accuracy.
It would be worth checking though...

I have cracked more than one 1911 aluminum frame. They shot just fine with the crack too. Matter of fact, I have cracked at least one slide too. Cracked lugs off barrels and all kinds of other stuff. Of course, the guns were heavily shot. But small matter, they can all be repaired.
It isnt a Caspian frame. It also isnt the first one I have ever seen. This one has been shot enough that it is broken in nicely. I built quite a few guns on Caspians, they were nice too, but this frame is "trimmer" than the usually beefy Caspian around the frontstrap area.

Good pick up. The Baer guns are one of the better for values for the dollar out there in the custom/ custom production line. And unlike some of the others out there Les is a nice to guy to deal with and will take the time to talk to the regular guys like me. Cant say that about some.

Not an alloy frame but fondled a stainless Springfield Compact at my LGS. Have no idea how much its been shot but the slide is really tight,no rattles and it has Trijicon sights and 4 mags. Dealer is asking $725 cash,is this a fair price? I have ZERO cash but do have some trading hardware.

dmize, anytime you try to trade in guns to a shop, you will not be getting anywhere near top dollar for your trade items. Best to hang on to them....
I test fired that Baer LW 5" 45 today. Staggered different kinds of bullets in it. Ran like a champ. This one will be coming home with me soon!

So tell us Dawgs... Is this frame Marked "Baer?" Les built customs long before he put his name on a frame. I sprung for my first alloy 1911 in a pre series II Kimber CDP Compact. Snagged a few other alloy 1911 since then but they have all been less than full size. Does it have a ramped barrel? Don't those alloy frame 1911s like to chew up the feed ramp? We need pictures! While $750 for a used compact Springfield does sound a bit high all Springfields are not equal. My compact stainless Springfield came as a used loaded V10. A little 30LPI checkering on the front strap is all it might need. Came in the box and looked as new. Seems like it was $650ish..

Stan, the frame is marked Baer and the barrel has a integral supported ramp. The night sights are about dead tho..... pretty dim.
Carried it all day today in a Milt Sparks Summer Special. Im quite sure even tho it is one of Baer's older customs it has a gunfight or two left in it!

Pictures man! Pictures! Les has been building customs for quite some time but does anyone remember when he started using frames with his name on them? I'm thinking early to mid 90s?

Which model did you order?
They are amazing 1911s. Jeff Hoover and Mike Barranti were with me to break in my brand new Premier II a couple of summers ago. I had serious doubts that a 1911 that tight was going to run reliably. Not only did it in fact run like a scalded assed ape, it was no real chore to repeatedly ring the 50 meter swinging piggy.
The only thing about the Baer guns is the frame seems to be a bit longer than some others from front to back. I was reading on the 1911 forums about a stock maker, Sarge, who builds stocks especially for the Baer. The pics I saw were quite nice. I may have to investigate his work.....

I am looking forward to it, I ordered there "ultimate tactical carry" Its basically the thunder ranch without the markings, went with the 3.5 lb trigger and the the standard grips vs the slim. Only thing I may change on the order is the rear sight, its suppose to come with fixed rear I may change to the adjustable. I have heard about "sarge" seen some of his grips on the 1911 forum, look pretty nice, A while back I handled a set of vz grips that I liked.. vzgrips.com/gun-grips/1911/simonich-gunner

Ok, very good. Keep up with me on this. It would be interesting to compare notes a bit. On the subject of the slim grips, mine are growing on me. But as my vision starts to get worse and worse, I may have to try those crimson trace jobs that my buddy Jeff Quinn is so hot on....
