So a freind says "Hey i bet you can't hit this 12" round gong at 100, 150 or 200 yards with a handgun." You say, "Oh yes i can!"
What gun do you reach into your safe and pull out? How often do you expect to hit it? If you pick a single shot, you have to also pick a semi-auto or revolver(the single shots are cheating!). I had to throw in 150 and 200 because 100 yards isn't long distance for some handgunners. Just take your pick.
Out to 100 yards, right now, i'd probably grab my Ruger .45 Bisley Old Vaquero. Beyond that, I'd grab the Bisley Hunter .44, mostly because it has a scope. At 100 yards, i'd like to not miss, but i'd take 50%. Beyond that, a hit or two out of six would be allright for now. I havn't shot longer ranges in quite a while. That's upsetting to me!
Whacha'll got?

For me, its an S&W 624 4" .44 special. I regularly shoot it at 150 yards, and know how to sight it properly (hold-over).

This 375 Atomic: My favorite load is a 228 gr hardcast @ 1,500 fps. ] Off the bench I can always land shots on a 12" plate. At 150 yards I could probably place 2 or 3 out of 5. Never tried 200 yards on a 12" target but the gun is capable. That said it will routinely put down 200 meter rams. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

I think i've seen it around here before, but i'll have to read up a little on that round. What-abouts in the body size on the ram? 14x18? I've wanted to get into silhouette shooting for a few years now.

Went 4 out of 6 last Sunday with my 6" S&W 657 from Elmer's recline position. My gong is set at 100 yards but its an old disc blade so I think it's bigger than 12" diameter, maybe 14-16". Still have an on going challenge with my son to hit it with my NAA Mini, no winner yet!

If a bench is included my 454 SRH. I was shooting 2 liter bottles at 250,2 weeks ago. And it is scoped. Offhand 9 1/2 44 SRH w/o scope.

Probably the 4" 586. It seems to shoot well at distance. I've shot fairly well with the ex's g-19 also. When I was shooting it a fair bit several years ago, it would do 3-4 hits per 10 rds on the 18" plate @ 300. Two handed picked up a round or two per 10. I dinged the 24" 600 yd plate with it once, one out of 10 with a spotter, and two handed kneeling. Only time I've tried the 600 with a pistol. The k-22 is pretty good at 200 and under, but after 200 seems to drop off quite a lot compared to other things.

Okay... Since the Dawgs isn't going to do it I'll have to play the devil's advocate myself. More times than not getting close provides more target reaction than a dead center hit. Then I see people shoot a bunch of wild shots on paper and when a few (3-5) end up in the same general area they want to call that their "group" Hang a target big enough to catch ALL your shots and report every shot, not just the ones you like... This long range thing brings in much more than just your handgun, bullet, brass, crimp, and your personal "pet" load... Your trigger control, your sight alignment, your grip, and the way you control recoil mean more and more as the range increases. I'll remind everyone once again about our Curmudgeon's statement that based on what he saw in his long range testing at Super Vel he would use only new brass in his handloads..

I have yet to shoot at 200y though, by co-ink-idink, I've got a couple of AR500 plates at 200 - a 12" and an 8". I'll try to go for "hang time" and shoot it with some sub 600 fps loads in 45 Colt out of a Mountain Gun. Shorter barrels mean you can get away less front sight, eh?

1st choice: FA 454
2nd: FA 357
I favor flatter trajectories for medium long.

1st - Crawley Custom 1911 in 9x23 Winchester 2nd - Alan Harton Custom 45 Colt Montado 3rd - Alan Harton Custom 32 Mag Single Six 4th - Ruger SRH 454 with open sights; scoped would move it up the list. I started shooting IMHSA with a 4" S&W 686 and I thought the 200 yard rams were easier to hit than the turkeys at 150. That's firing prone or sitting. Off hand, I imagine I could hit 1 or 2 at distance. The guns are up to the task. Clearly, I am the weak link.
