Great job COR! I too headed to CO for the second season on a DIY. I got a lot of great exercise and only smelled one elk. Too hot. Where were you at? I was in GMU 28.

GMU 4... The weather was tough this year, too warm, no snow until end of week after I scored. I've had those years too, although hunters hate to admit it, sometimes it's just sheer luck
Elk backstrap on grill today...

Outstanding hunt and write up COR. I have much more respect for do it your selfer hunts than any guided hunt. Says a lot about the hunter! That elk is 100% yours and a true trophy taken with your skill alone. Congratulations! Being from Pittsburgh, I hope our paths cross. Barranti and I have talked about a field trip. Maybe this Spring.

COR, Thanks for the tip. I picked it up tonight at the local library, have a couple of flights this week and this will help pass the time.
Great job on the elk hunt. I got out on an early hunt this year and did not see a thing! Still a priceless way to spend four days in some beautiful country. Russ

Great pics, great story, congrats on your first.
Is that your stock, or did you rent the horses?

Great job Curt....very good photo's. I can just feel your excitement in your writing. This is why I moved to Colorado from the east coast...just couldn't get enough of it.

Very well done. Am I mistaken or did you have 2 different sixguns on in 2 different pics? Elk hunting is some of the hardest outdoor activity I have ever done. That air is THIN for us sea level kind of folks!

Good catch Markbo...That is my 2 3/4" Security Six in the pic where I am sitting down. The gun I hunted with was the 44Spl FT.
My buddy (lives in Hilton head) tried that "sea level" excuse all season ;D ...I only live at about 1000ft here. In all seriousness he did comment on how much better shape he needed to be in the next time out, I felt really good this time and I was glad I put in some work on the hills beforehand. That walk out would have been near impossible for me had I not had relatively good legs and wind.

Very nicely written description! I always envy those who can live the "man's life" in the wild west! (just a poor easterner here, can't hardly find a spot that is considered back-country)
Thanks for sharing!
