The 42 mags have been hard to find here in Idaho but when I'm packing one of my 41 maggies I like 8 grs of Unique with a 230 gr Keith, I use that load a lot. When I'm serious I use 17 grs of 2400 & the same slug, both with standard LP primers. This isn't a max load but its taken many head of game including elk. Another recent favorite is a 250 gr LBT fueled with 9.2 grs of Unique, I'm getting about 1150 fps with this one & it exited both shoulders of a cow elk & might still be going. Pretty hard to find a bad load in a 41 maggie, I'd guess the same for your 42! ;D

For a good all around general purpose load Iike 8.5gr of Unique under any 215gr commercial SWC. It is not exactly what I would call a plinking load but 8.0gr - 8.5gr of Unique seems to be the sweet spot with this combo. For plinking 7.5 might be better but I've not tried it yet. For a full up hunting load I like 18.5gr of 2400 under a Montana Bullets H&G #258 bullet, it is a stout but manageable load and very accurate. As a added benefit it shoots to same POA for me as the Unique load. I did try 19.0gr of 2400 with the H&G bullet but that load is just down right obnoxious I had a very brief but fleeting thought of trying Elmer's recommended load of 20.0gr of 2400 with the H&G bullet. After shooting the 19.0gr load I quickly thought otherwise. Be it mice, moose or anything in between I doubt anything will stand a chance if hit properly with the above two loads. If so then the task should have been undertaken with a rifle/shotgun from the get go.

.41 Magnum: 12.0 grains of Blue Dot, Remington cases, CCI large magnum primer, 215-gr Tennessee Valley Bullets LSWC, firm roll crimp - nice load that shoots in the low/mid-1200 -fps-range from a 4" tube, shoots like a laser. Used this happily for years, but after the "Sky is Falling!" warnings Alliant put out a couple years ago, I called and spoke to a fellow there. I told him of this load and he said, "That's acceptable." He also allowed that they'll be putting out new load data soon. So, use at your own risk. 9.2 grains of Unique, Remington cases, CCI large magnum primer, 215-gr LSWC hardcasts of any type, moderate roll crimp - my longtime all-the-time .41 Mag load. Gives mid-1100-fps-range velocities from a 4" gun, and is very accurate (Hey, it's a .41! 7.5 gr 7625, Remington cases, CCI large standard primer, 215-gr TVB LSWC hardcasts, moderate roll crimp - a mild load I'm finding is very pleasant. Throws the bullets at just over 1k fps from a the 4" barrel, with deviations less than 15 fps. Another (yawn) laser from the .41. This would be the handload that I would use in the gun for "social work" - when I keep the gun around the house loaded for Gina to use, this is what goes in it. 6.5 grains Trail Boss, CCI cases, CCI large standard primer, any 215-gr LSWCs, moderate roll crimp - POWDER PUFF for the .41! Gina loved shooting this. I would note that it was one of the least accurate .41 loads I've ever rolled, but that just means that it shot like a .45 Glock so it's no problem. Velocities around 860 fps from the 4" gun, deviation around 15 fps.

I killed my bull moose with a 225 gr. GC Cast bullet with 19 gr. of 2400. It was traveling at about 1396 fps. One shot, one kill. Lately I have been using the same 250 gr LBT WFN as sixshot with 17 gr. of 2400. I haven't shot this caliber very much for the last few years. I do plan on going back to the 41 again soon. Steve

Did anyone ever get or hear the technical explanation around Blue Dot and the 41? -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

I like 17.5gr of 2400 under a 215gr "Keith". Averages a bit over 1300fps out of a 5.5" Bisley BH. Very accurate & pleasant to shoot.

Lee, I know that Freedom Arms put out a warning using Blue Dot in the 41 maggie, can't remember for sure but some kind of a pressure spike caused the red alert.

At Alliant Powder, we take safety seriously. That’s why we periodically test our products in different situations to be sure our use recommendations stay current. Check here for any safety notes or recall information. Stay safe and keep accurate. Alliant Powder periodically reviews and tests their published reloading data to verify that our recommended recipes have not changed over time. During the latest review Alliant Powder discovered that Alliant Powder's Blue Dot® should not be used in the following applications: Blue Dot® should NOT be used in the 357 Magnum load using the 125 grain projectile (Blue Dot® recipes with heavier bullet weights as specified in Alliant Powders Reloading Guide are acceptable for use). Blue Dot® should NOT be used in the 41 Magnum cartridge (all bullet weights). Use of Blue Dot® in the above cases may cause a high pressure situation that could cause property damage and serious personal injury. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
