I also think one of the things that sets a hard back text book apart from a phone book or newspaper is, specifically, the hard cover and back. That's really dense stuff, and it has a laminated surface holding it together. That cover has to present a very formidable barrier to the bullet, specifically on exit from the first book and entry into the second.

You Brute!!! The guy in the water had his hands up and you blew his head off anyway... At least now we know what to use for makeshift vests in case of a dire emergency. I thought it was funny during the Egyptian uprising this guy had loaves of bread and two liter bottles taped to his head for protection from stones.
