Found a 4 3/4 inch SAA for sale. It's a 44 Special and all blue. S/N is SA258xx. No box. I can't find any serial number breakdown on the 3rd gen Colts except that the 3rd gen SAA's started with an SA prefix in 1978. This would be my first Colt SAA and I don't want to make a mistake. Does $925 sound like a fair price? pics

Interesting that the frame isn't case colored.
I'd say anything under $1000 for a Colt SAA in that kinda shape is a good deal.

Unless it's a special edition gun I think $925 is a bit high for a reblued 3rd gen. I bought a NIB SAA from Buds a few years back for $1100.

I calculate manufacture date to be1979. Without the box, hard to tell if it was originally all blue. Colt could tell you but might charge you.

Last year I got a Colt SAA in .44 special with 4 .75 inch barrel that is all blue with polished hammer. Same as the OP. That was the "style" of finish offered in 1979. Bright-sided hammer. Purchase price was higher than this gun. I'd jump on that price if I were you.

Nice Colt! I would have been sorely tempted at that price too. It never hurts to have a genuine Colt SAA in the safe, and having one in 44 Special is just that much better. That's like killing two birds with one stone. Great barrel length too!

I love this thing, like JT says in one of his books there is just "something" about a genuine Colt Single Action Army.
I was reading the Colt SAA sections in a couple of JT's books earlier. Now I'm a little concerned about oversized throats. I'll measure those soon, next time I have access to a set of pin gauges.
Also, the mainspring seems to be very light. I'd say the effort required to cock the hammer is half of what my Ruger Montado is.
Oh, I got it for a little under the asking price and he threw in a hard case and a couple boxes of CCI Blazer ammo.

The bores run about .427/.428, same barrel they use on the 44-40, but the cylinder SHOULD be about.430/.431. I always used standard .430 sized bullets in mine because I didn"t know about the tight barrel until much later, never gave me any problems except some leading around the forcing cone, shot just fine. The 45 Colt is notorious for over sized cylinder mouth's.
