That is a nice photo of the gun. To my notion, the Colt 1860 Army is one of the handsomest handguns ever made. Bob Wright I agree 100%.

Well I got a chance to try out my 45 Colt black powder loads today. I gotta say, I'm HOOKED. Wow, this is the way 45 Colt was meant to be shot :-)
Load was a full case + compression of FFg Goex (35 grains weighed/measured), under two different bullets. First was a standard 255 LSWC, the ol' bevel base variety from Magnus Bullet Co. I melted the lube out of the grooves and then re-lubed (pan lubed) with a 50/50 mix of beeswax and Crisco. The other bullet was the 270 SAA bullet from a Mihec mold. Same lube.
The 270 SAA bullet shot considerably high from POA, which is very unusual in the 7.5" barrel Vaquero I was shooting these in. The front sight is really tall, never filed down, and most loads hit way low unless I hold the front sight up in the rear notch a bit. These loads were a good 6" high at 25 yards, though.
The 255 lswc shot pretty much to point of aim, maybe a little to the left, at 25 yards.
Recoil and report was "full bodied", for lack of a better description. When the first one lit off, I had everyone's attention. FAWOOOOM. Firm recoil, lots of fire and smoke. Messy. What's not to love?
I dumped all my brass in a jug of soapy water for the ride home when I was finished. The gun looked horrible when I put it on the bench to start cleaning, but after soaking everything down with a mix of Murphy's Soap, alcohol, and peroxide, all the fouling just dissolved right away. Easy. Let it dry (the alcohol speeds that process) and re-lubed.
I might start tinkering with different loads, FFg vs. FFFg, using over powder wads with lower charge weights, etc, but for now it's pretty fun to just fill the case and throw fire and brimstone downrange

I shoot CAS with 1860 Piettas. A little tuning and some inconspicous modifications and they become highly reliable. I have 5 monthlys and a major match under my belt this year with one failure to fire. Cap fired but charge didn't go. Recapped and she went bang. Don't know what happened. They can't match a modern cartridge gun for speed in handling but that's not important to me. I just want to beat that character that lives about 70 miles north of me that is shooting 1861s.

If I get a ROA, it's going to be stainless, so I can put it in the dishwasher with reckless abandon!
