With an (old) Vaquero that has an atrocious trigger and shoots a pattern rather than a group? The thing is, I like it! I think this one might suffer from the infamous undersized chamber throats. It's just all over the paper at 15-20 yards. I know some of it is attributable to the poor trigger, but not all. It is a sexy looking thing with the 3.75 inch barrel. I thought about having the barrel cut to 2.5 or 3 inches and the ejector rod and housing removed, as in the old Colt Sheriff's Model. I have never felt the need for custom work, but in my old age, well . . . . .

I sent my Montado to Alan Harton and now it shoots like a dream. Mine was all over the place when I first got it; same as your Vaquero.

I have a pair of the same guns and both had tight chambers of varying degrees. Was fortunate enough to get in line when folks on the Ruger forum were sending around the traveling reamer so was able to fix 'em right up along with several others. I will say both shoot better--but honestly they were not that to start with. Most all my new models get an aftermarket trigger spring as soon as they come home. I would measure the cylinders to start with if your preference is to keep it in-house. You can fiddle with the spring to help the pull weight, but wont fix a poor trigger with creep, etc. Otherwise, it sounds like the perfect reason to get acqainted with a great smith.
Certainly do not get rid of it--super cool little rigs for sure.

Curious as to what type bullets you have tried. My Bisley SS has tight throats and lead is just fair to good, but jacketed shoot outstanding, so thats what I mainly shoot in it. 8-10 grs of W231 under Speer 260 gr jacketed bullets shoots around an inch at 25 yards.

Ok, you have gotten my curiosity up... Has Ruger made cylinders with under sized throats in calibers other than the well documented 44-40WCF? Is this an issue I should be looking out for? I really hope not...

Yes, nearly every 45 made in recent years has undersized throats. .450" (or less) is common for 45 Colt throats, and I had a 45 Auto cylinder that had .448-.449" throats. Had them both reamed to .4525" and now the gun shoots great with cast bullets.

Well crud... I really wasn't wanting to be disappointed in yet another Vaquero. I was looking forward to having a big bore Ruger back in my collection without having to go to a full blown custom...Yet... any advice?

I sent my cylinders to cylindersmith www.cylindersmith.comOr, if you are going to have more than one 45 Ruger that this will need to be done to, buy the reamer and learn to do it yourself (or borrow the tools from someone how already has them).

I just had a smith take an older Vaquero (1995) and make it look just like yours, and to shoot well 11.5 grn Hs6 with a lyman 255 grn.swc-k-gc from MBW. It shoots better than I can hold it, out of a machine rest it will shoot all six at 20 yds in a 3/4 inch hole....and it was $1200.00 to get it cleaned up and done over to do so
