When first got the 45/70 BFR I whined about the recoil. I played with different grips but eventually went back to the rubbers that came with it. I loaded some 12 and 13 grain Trail Boss loads with 405 gr cast bullets an have been using those for several months. These Trail Boss loads have gotten too tame at this point and I'm looking for something with some more pizaz. A buddy of mine who has grown tired of reloading gave me a bottle of Varget. I also have some IMR4227 that I use in the 44 mag. I have some 300 grain .451 Hornady bullets. There are a couple of listings in my manual I can follow but I was just wondering if any of you'all had any experience along these line, given these powders and bullet weights.

I shoot 50.0 of 3031 with a 405 grain soft-point in my 450 Marlin BFR, Should work well in your 45-70 too. It's pretty stout but very accurate. In fact, this group was shot @ 100 yards off the bench (open sights): -Lee www.singleactions.com

Thanks. I sighted the gun way high and put the front sight on the bottom edge of the plate. At that distance a 12" round circle looks like a pin point on top of the blade. It actually makes for a crisp sight pattern. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Shooting the .450 M in a handgun must be exciting! I have a Marlin MR with 22" barrel and had to put a softer pad on it to keep the pain level down! But man does it shoot!!! Sub MOA at 100 with 2X Redfield.

Nice shooting Lee! I worked on 100 yard open sight shooting a few years ago, it's a challenge. Especially with a revolver getting all chambers to obey.

Heavy est load I used last weekend was 54 grains of Varget under a 350 grain Hornady jrn. Recoil wasn't bad and there were no signs of excessive pressure. Interesting side note was that small grains of spent powder showed up on the cylinder after shooting that resembled minature bright yellow elbow macaroni. Not making this up and no alcohol was involved.

Did my usual Sunday shooting this weekend but brought the camera. Ypu can see that some of the spent powder leaves behind yellow tubes. Not knowing how Varget is made I am assuming that there is some kind of inert shell that they some how impregnate with the smokeless explosive to form the powder. Just curious as to how they make the stuff. Have to do some research
