I am using 240g lead SWC ahead of 7.5g of Unique in my Ruger Flattop 44 Special. It has the 4 and 5/8" barrel. The speed I am getting is an AV of 950 fps. From reading Taffin and a few others this load should be getting that from a 7.5 barrel.
For those using this load, what is your speed? Has Unique changed that much since those articles were written. Late 80s early 90s.

Bullet to barrel fit, barrel cylinder gap, crimp and different primers can make a difference.

i'd suggest that you not worry about velocity as such a load is dependant on whether the chambers are tight or not, the barrel is "fast" or not, the barrel/cylinder gap(over .005" being slower than tighter ones), and the lot of the powder being used. only thing to think about is whether the load hits to poa and that you don't have to go through too many changes to get it regulated. just enjoy shooting it if all is well, the moon being in alignment and having your mouth open jest right.

If that is a commercial style bullet, with a short nose and a long bevel base, you may be getting a little more pressure than a Keith style bullet. If so, that may be getting you an extra 50 to 75 fps.

I got that velocity from a 5.5" barrel flat top 44 Spl. with a 250 grain Keith, so no, your numbers don't sound out of line.

That's what I get with the same load and gun. I don't get to concerned about 100 fps difference any animal will not know the difference.

Well, if ya have a certain velo number in your head that you expect to see...drop to 7 gr of Unique next time around. Its a thought I may try next time. I don't have a chrono here, the 7.5 gr Skeeter loading just seems a bit much for killin' paper. cans, and such. Am going more by recoil. stevemb

Not to split hairs but why do you consider Velocity is not speed. According to Merriam-Webster, speed & velocity are synonymous:
Definition of VELOCITY 1 a : quickness of motion : speed <the velocity of sound> b : rapidity of movement <[my horse's] strong suit is grace & personal comeliness, rather than velocity — Mark Twain> c : speed imparted to something <the power pitcher relies on velocity — Tony Scherman> 2 : the rate of change of position along a straight line with respect to time : the derivative of position with respect to time
Definition of SPEED 2. a : the act or state of moving swiftly : swiftness b : rate of motion: as (1) : velocity 1 (2) : the magnitude of a velocity irrespective of direction

DICTIONARY DEFINITIONS NOTWITHSTANDING, BULLET "SPEED" IS NORMALLY TERMED MUZZLE VELOCITY EXCEPT OF COURSE IN "FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BULLET".

Thanks for the info.
Yes I know the more common term is velocity, but I had to speed things up before I got called by the next kid who needed help. They keep me hopping.
