I've bought great second hand guns from Gallagher, Bowen, Clements and Dustin Linebaugh. I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything produced from them. They are great. Other than that, I'll go FA.

Fellow posted a couple days ago on the Ruger forum that it took him 3 years to get a custom .44 special from one of the Smiths. Nice end product. Doesn't look like there was any serious metalwork involved. Seems like that's a long wait.

OK, people on-line will call you ishy names, unless you deal with these people face to face, so what? By not revealiing his name you are encouraging him, which means you care more about your on-line reputation than possibly helping people from making a mistake. Read this forum thread all the way through, then think if letting it go is really the best thing to do. forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?180126-Webley-cylinder-repair

I'm not too sure about that. Seems every custom gunsmith has "a following" of guys that will stick up for them no matter the cost. Judging by what you stated, I think you got took. Whoever this gunsmith is...he's not one I would want to use. Keep his name private, otherwise you'll get dumped on

If the additional charges were a result of the finish you requested (ie: it cost the gunsmith more to have it outsourced), I'd be ok with it...maybe because the project was delayed, but not going into the smith's pocket. If the extra charge was for the gunsmith's own work, I'd be a little tweaked.

The finish I requested was included in the original estimate. I changed nothing from the original order. Yup I'm pissed.

"so many corrupt and unethical business people in the firearm business." I think that is way over stating the facts. So many ethical good easy to work with here take the gun and pay me later types it is amazing. It is RARE to see unethical folks in this business. they stand out and word spreads around. I think the dragging the delivery and then charging more because of that is insane. if not purely laughable.

I think the dragging the delivery and then charging more because of that is insane. if not purely laughable. I don't think I am over stating it. You should follow some of the many threads on the AF forums involving custom builds, 3-6 year delivery time frames, builders not willing to pay return shipping for rifles that don't feed correctly, unexpected price increase, etc. There are reports of people ordering rifles and being 100% screwed out of the money. One of the reasons it seems RARE to see unethical folks is for the reasons stated before, people are unwilling to report by name bad experiences because of the hassle they receive. Sometimes they feel cheated and will not admit it, been there, done that. There are very reliable, honest, and ethical people as well and they get mentioned.

I congratulate you on taking the high road.
If I may ask, what percent increase was this "late delivery surcharge"?

MY 2cents All this smack down crap is a bunch of BULL. The guy quoted a price and time frame and did not do either! Keep your mouth shut or you'll get smacked down! Take it like a man! Bunch a BULL!
After you get your gun back post what this guy really is a LIAR. on ever forum you can find. He promised a price and a time frame and did not do either Expose him for what he is. Tell the truth and you can not go wrong. Are you suppose to take it and cowar down, that is not in my nature for sure let him have it.
All that said I sure hope he did a fine job and have a gun you are proud of! good luck. JMO as Usual 45c

Some call it taking the "high road" which depending on details it may still be but I would surmise then it is wise to post on this forum that one is going send a firearm to gunsmith- a, and make sure that no one else has been conned by this smith.
If any of you read the thread I posted you will see that even the ATF cannot, or will not, stop smiths with unethical practices, so getting the word out is not really the low road, but simple consumer protection, IF-IF the smith is truly unethical.

PS -I came too close to sending a firearm to the smith in the thread who is near a criminal in his actions. Reading the thread absolutely stopped me.

Until you've posted about an experience like the one above, you have no idea just how ugly it can get. When I did it, I thought I'd save other people the grief I went through. Afterwards, I was hoping some of those posters got to experience the exact grief I went through. Needless to say, I'll never do it again.

While there are some bad apples out there, most of the disconnects with gunsmiths and gun owners are no more than miscommunications and sometimes unavoidable personal problems. Be aware of the reputation of the guy who is building your custom. I learned long ago that there are gunsmiths out there who will attempt to do whatever you are will ing to pay them to do. Choose your gunsmith carefully and communicate, communicate, communicate.. Don't make assumptions..

I recall some of those posts on the damaged gun & how much grief the original poster recieved. I think it was a bunch of BS that the poster recieved the reaction that he did. I would really like to know who this gunsmith is before I send out for my next custom. If your not comfortable posting up the information publically would you please send me a e-mail with the info? Send to: SS44 at Hotmail.com
Thank you & good luck with your new custom. ~JM~
