New member here from central MS (I try to stay out of Jackson). Have to admit that I've been lurking around for quite awhile. I checked my profile, and I actually joined back in 2009 I'm embarrassed to say. I am a fellow civil eng. like Zeus (I ordered you and friends stripped AR-15 lowers when I had my FFL, and also bought that Ruger OMSBH that you had matte finished). I have managed to acquire a few nice guns over the years, but the pictures you guys post have me wanting more. I really have a hankering for a SS octagon bbl. 5 shot 475, either an FA or a Gallagher like that Axe keeps posting. Some day I would love a D. Linebaugh Bis. Vaquero w/ss oct. bbl. My question is what is the current delivery time for the big names - John and Dustin Linebaugh, Clements, Gallagher, Harton? I understand that an FA may take only 6-8 weeks. I hate to call each one just to ask this, but if some take 1-2 years I can go ahead and get one started and maybe stagger another. I will surely call and ask plenty questions when ordering. Now if I can keep those custom 1911's and rifles from getting in the way. Thanks for any info.

Welcome aboard, we won't hold any association with Glenn against you! You are right about a phone call getting the best answer but I have not had a full blown custom take less than a year and sometimes up to 3 years depending on the job and the shop. I'd get a base gun and get it in line as quickly as possible so it comes out as quickly as possible as well.
Oh ya, watch out for the Axehandle, he can be a bad influence on us poor working guys!

It's not me! It's not me! Zeus is the real problem... +1 on time.. Depend on how you hit them too.. Lots of internal and external factors impact a custom builder's schedule.. I've literally had a custom turned in two weeks. Then there is that pair that is going on 12 years.

Custom jobs seem to have a life of their own. Sometimes some of the big names will STOP taking orders for a while. I would agree no less than 18 months tho and prolly more. The exception is Reeder, he gets his out quite a bit sooner. But then again, he is not a one man operation.

Thanks everyone for the information. Guess I better get in line. Maybe get an F.A. 475 while I am waiting.

Welcome! My vote and recommendation is to go the FA route. They build a high quality gun. Although I can't find it today, there is post on this site somwhere from a fellow member who has been waiting for 2 years for his gun from Clements. Mark

To the OP. I would go with the Freedom Arms. The pistol smiths you mention all do good work but remember these are conversions. None would be as strong (or as well built IMO) as the Freedom Arms guns. Only down side is they are 4 shooters

Handle a top shelf conversion and an FA and to me at least, the custom is a nicer piece with a better feel to it. I love FAs, but a good custom is really hard to beat, particularly if it is built exactly the way you want it. Not trying to be argumentative, but a high end custom isn't just a Ruger, IMHO.

I believe Bowen is probably going to be the quickest but probably still not less than a year. Same for Stroh, last I talked to him which was two years ago. The rest are going to be fairly long.

Al I have to vote with Whit on this one of custom versus FA. Like many of the guys here I have both and while it is true the FA is a wonderful piece of engineering I feel like it has a very tight but ulitarian action and feel. Totally different than some of my favorite customs which may or may not lock up as tight but are smoother feeling, shoot as nice and are much more aesthetically pleasing. Just my $.02 worth ;D

My Harton 500 Linebaugh. It is perfection. Absolutely beautiful....but wow, that is a seriously tall front sight...Somewhere there is a sailboat missing its rudder Although with a 500L I am sure every bit of that tall sight is called for.
