I own 2 by him, and will own more. Here is a Bisley Super Blackhawk with a 5" S&W barrel:

I've met him a time or two and he seems like a nice guy. I've also seen and handled some of his finished products. Very nice indeed. But, when compared to some of the other top smiths, his workshop technique appears to be a bit primitive.

The 5.5 Octagon gun is a Bisley SHB (44) with Gallagher's standard action work.. That and the free spin pawl are all that you can't see in the picture. I'll bring it for show and tell when we get out to do some shooting..

John is a great guy and does excellent work. I still have a couple of his guns and will have more. He's one of the good guys. His action work is amazing and the guns shoot really well. Very reasonable prices for what you get. You will not be disappointed.

John does great work and is a great guy to boot. When I told him last summer about John Linebaughs heart attack, the first thing he did was donate 6 or 7 custom octagon barrels to sell with all the money going to John Linebaugh. Very class act. Here is are a couple he as done for me and he is working on 3 more right now.

While the advent of the space age has brought on many wonderous manufacturing tools and techniques there is a lot to be said for appears to be primitive workshop technique. Don't I remember reading that one of the tests for a gunsmith candidate at Pachmayr, when it was one of the premier gunshops, was to hand the applicant a piece of steel and a flat file with the instructions to return it perfectly square. It may give up speed but it is hard to argue with the soul of the finished product.
