I finally finished my 500 Maximum and tested it this morning: The load I'm using is 38.0 of AA1680 with a 525 grain WFN. I haven't chronographed it yet, but from what I've been told it should be going 1,300 - 1,350. Approach with caution though because this is close to max. I only had 50 rounds to work with, but got it sighted and it looks like it wants to shoot. 5-shots at 25 yards off the bench: I'm still getting used to it so I'm convinced it'll do better. Plus with 30 degree temps this morning I think the shooter didn't live-up to the gun's potential. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Thanks Whit. You'll enjoy it. That load is pretty stout and I'm sure it's about as hard as we'll want to push 525's. That said, 50 rounds didn't punish me.....even off the bench. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Wow, Dirty Harry once said " a man's got to know his limitations" and I know that's way beyond mine. That being said I sure do enjoy seeing your labors of love. Beautiful work, on the gun and on the paper! Very impressive!

Lee, the only major critique I can find on that gun is that it doesn't belong to me.
Incredible work. Thank you for sharing.
Did you build this from stainless and use the CM frame?
If so, did they chrome the stainless also?

That is beautiful! Has to be satisfying.
525s at 1,300 f/s! Wow!

Man that's one sweet looking gun you made/have there.
Your shooting 525s at 1300+FPS off a bench, ouch!

You must like pain Lee. From what I have heard one or two cylinders of 500 Long is all most can handle. And those are the 440 grain loads. Can't imagine 525 grainers at that speed. Great looking cannon though.

Wasn't painful to shoot at all.....after 50 rounds my hands felt fine. In fact, I wish I had another 50 to work with last Saturday. There seems to be a lot of hype and exaggeration surrounding the 500 Max (or maybe I'm just immune to big recoil). With a little focus and a firm grip it's quite manageable. It does come back fast but never once got close to my forehead. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Man that's nice. You guys are starting to sway me on this 500 maximum. I still haven't decided on what to turn my 357 max into. Was leaning towards a 445, but now..... Question: I assume it is easy to download this monster to milder levels? Like middle to upper 500 Linebaugh?

Nicely done, Lee. My 500 max with that load is less brutal than some of my 454 & 475 loads with lighter bullets at the same speeds. 300's @1600 from a 454 or a 420's @1300+ from a 475 are more punishing than my 515's @1300+ from my 500 Max.
Dang Lee, now when I call Ron, I am no longer "the guy with the hard chromed 500 Maximum" He remembers that one.
