Handloads with Winchester primers that have lit fine in my other guns. I checked the screw and it's still loctited in place. I'm bewildered.

Hmmm, sounds like a trip to S&W might be in order; however, I'd ask this question over on the S&W forum first to see if anyone might be able to give you some additional suggestions. Might save a trip back to the factory.
Wonder if it's a headspace issue? If this were a frame mounted firing pin gun (which I assume it's not, based on when you said it was made), I'd say put an extended firing pin in it. I'd also be curious to pop the side plate and look for any other evidence of shadetree gunsmithin' (no offense to all the fine shadetree smiths we have here!)

Yes, it's a hammer mounted firing pin. I haven't popped the side plate because I have no business being in there. I may head over to the Smith forum, not much of a Smith guy so I need all the help I can get. Got frustrated so I took my trusty GP-100 out today and it shot 100 rounds of that ammo perfectly.
