I don't mean to highjack this thread but I have a question?
Does stag mean antler? So, elk stag is made from elk antler?
Thanks, HH

HH, my understanding of it has been that "stag" originally meant Sambar stag from India. I believe this is on the non-import list now so folks are using elk and moose antler and using the term stag. Not trying to be the verbage police but I personally think elk and moose antler grip panels should be called antler rather than stag but I don't like the term old vaquero as well I am kind of a name stick in the mud.

Elk, Stag, Moose, Deer..... Way over my head. I read: Definition of stag in the Online Dictionary. Meaning of stag. Pronunciation ... stag (st g). n. 1. The adult male of various deer...

I would hesitate to shoot really heavy 44 mag loads with them on but I sure wouldn't not shoot them on 44 Specials or 357's. Shoot, General Patton had them on one of his revolvers he carried and he sure shot them. These actually fit the XR-3 grip frame really well and they are nice and snug. THAT'S NO EARTHQUAKE YOU FELT! IT IS PATTON TURNING OVER IN HIS GRAVE. HE SAID: "ONLY A NEW ORLEANS PIMP WOULD HAVE PEARL GRIPS!!" HIS WERE IVORY!!!! BUT MANY TEXAS RANGERS PREFERRED MOP. You could add Bill Tilghman, Heck Thomas and JW Hardin to the roster of the famous and infamous, who sported Mother of Pearl, I'm sure among many others. I vote Elk or American Holly for that fine looking Flat Top.

To bad you don't have a OM Super. I have a pair of Sack's elk antler grips that I could be persuaded to help a brother out with for a nominal price (this is not an advertisement - not really looking to sale). I also can't recommend Grashorn enough as well. I have several of his elk and a pair of horn grips that are nothing short of gorgeous to my eyes. Those horn grips are stunning! I really like the smooth elk as well, and will be contacting Mr. Grashorn tomorrow for some more information. Thanks for offering to deal on the Super grips, but I don't have any guns that they would fit. Kevin

I fired a Ruger .44 Flattop with Factory Stags. The first shot was unbelievable so I pulled back the hammer and tried one more. Nope, not for me. I installed smooth grips and never looked back. Carl

Ruger Ivory Now, back to the Original Post (OP). That's a fine looking 7-1/2" .44 Flattop. One does NOT see those very often. One of my favorite shooters. The white plastic grips give me zero trouble since I wear a shooting glove on my "strong hand". Carl

I agree Carl - grips with a lot of bark are not too comfortable to shoot. That said, the pic of the Bisley with barky (is that a word ) elk is smoother than it looks and is as comfy as the smooth elk pictured. The factory stag could be pretty gnarly...

Elk Bone, Ram horn and Antique Paper micarta look great on stainless or nickel guns (IMO). Personally, I like woods on blued guns, just think it looks classic. I dont like anything with texture that you can feel (eg: bark on antler or any checkering) since it really bites the hand when I shoot heavier loads, so I stick with smooth grips. Plus it lets the grip rock back in my hand like they were desigend to do.
