Hi everyone. I'm new to single actions, so I was hoping someone might clarify for me.
I came across a Hy Hunter 22 made in Germany, and it looked like it was made out of pot metal... I did like that it was a large frame like a 45LC, but chambered in 22.
Made me wonder if Ruger had such a model... Aren't the Single Six 22s smaller...?
Any insight would help. Thanks. -Kevin

Hi Kevin, welcome to a great place to hang out.You are right, the only Ruger single action 22's are on the smaller single six size frame. That said, one of the single sixes with the fully adjustable sights or better yet, one of the bisley single six 22's with the steel bisley gripframe definitely have more heft to them.

Looking for a large frame 22 revolver? The FA 252 has the same external dimensions as the 500WE.. It is a chunk of steel.

The Hy Hunter and the Hawes large frame .22's were built with alloys. The barrels and cylinders had steel sleeves in them. That said, they're not bad, considering the price you pay to acquire one (lets say $150 or less).
Ruger's Single Six is 7/8 scale to the Peacemaker, if that. So is the Colt Scout.
I have some interest in full size single action .22's. Here's all models I know of:
Great Western Arms Frontier SAA Inter Continental Arms / EMF Dakota (Jager / Uberti / Armi San Marco) Hy Hunter / Hawes (JP Sauer) EAA Bounty Hunter (Weirauch - in current production) USFA Plinker or 12/22 (in current production)
EMF is coming out with the Great Western II in .22. I imagine it will be a dandy. At this point, its not hard finding an original Great Western in .22

I'd like to try wildcatting some 22 caliber cylinders. Could I use a Single Six barrel on a Blackhawk frame...? Or are the Single Six barrels smaller threads...? -Kevin

The EAA Bounty Hunter comes in both a six-round and eight-round cylinder models.

Kevin, I have a USFA Plinker 22 LR/Mag with a 5.5" bbl that I am considering parting with. USFA only made about 50 of these Plinkers, all in 22. Of the 50, they sent about 5 to Turnbull, in the white, for them to do their full treatment on. The Turnbull guns were numbered with a DT suffix. This one was one of those 5, s/n 746DT. It initially shipped with a 4 3/4" bbl but USFA sent a 5.5" bbl to Turnbull and they switched the barrel before refinishing it. It has the original USFA factory black hard rubber grips along with a set of custom one-piece fancy walnut grips made by the folks at Turnbull. This is one heck of a great looking sixgun and the bone charcoal bluing and mirror polish make the blued parts almost look white in the light. Here are a few pictures. If you're interested in it, drop me an email and we can discuss off-line and I can send you more pictures. BB45C

That's a fine looking piece, but a little too expensive to possibly explode during testing... I wonder if I'll have to make a 5-shot 22 cylinder...

So you're looking for a CENTERFIRE 22?

Explode? Sounds like you need a centerfire 22 revolver or at least be prepared for the expense of converting a rimfire frame to centerfire. The low fruit might be to start with a 32 (centerfire) single six. Of course you will run into the OAL limitations of the cartridge provided by the cylinder. Have you considered starting with a 22 Hornet BFR? Centerfire, good lengthcylinder, and plenty of steel..

Sorry, I should have been more specific. Yes, I am looking to do a 22 centerfire. I guess the BFR would allow for much greater wildcatting, but I was hoping to start with a large frame Ruger for ease of parts.
