Has anyone swapped a New Model SBH hammer into a New Model mid frame Flat Top Ruger? I imagine it's a simple swap that fits, but I wanted to ask before I bought a couple of hammers. The swap-out is going into a pair of stainless .45 Convertible Flat Tops. Thanks.

I have swapped some in the Vaquero's and have one Mid frame flat top that has a Super hammer in it. The transfer bar needs to be swapped as well or the hammer face will have to be cut for the thicker transfer bar. Otherwise it will pinch and probably hold the transfer bar in the up position after firing. I couldn't figure out why the gate wouldn't open after I did the first swap, then I realized what was going on.

The Montado hammer solution is an even better idea. Thanks guys.

What is causing the problem when you use the transfer bar safety from the Mid frame Flat top frame? The smaller frames use thicker transfer bars? How hard would it be to thin the Mid frame transfer bar and where exactly would it need to be thinned?

I was going to put a Super hammer in my 45 Flat Top today or tomorrow but will wait for more info. You don't thin the transfer bar, or at least I don't. I file the second step of the hammer(the part that actually contacts the transfer bar) until the "pinch" is gone. You will notice that with the thick transfer bar and the Super hammer, that when you lower the hammer and keep the trigger held back, the hammer doesn't rest flush at the top on the frame as it should. When file the second step enough, the hammer rests flush and the transfer bar retracts when you release the trigger. One caveot, try it first before filing the hammer. I am not sure if all the revolvers went to this thick transfer bar and at what time they did. If you have a new hammer, it is possible that it is made to work with the new transfer bar. An easy test is to hold the hammers side by side when you tear it down and look at the difference in the steps of the hammers. Everyone seems to say the triggers on the mid frame revolvers is better than the regular Blackhawks. If so, Ruger may have removed some of the sear engagement, thus reducing transfer bar lift. If so, that would be a reason to thicken the transfer bar. To reduce the chance of chipping one.

I took the gun apart today and had to file the hammer notch as described by Tek4260. I was going to replace the XR3 grip frame with a XR3-RED off my early 2000's Blackhawk 45 but the ears were about 1/8" to short on the grip frame to match the cylinder frame. I had replaced the XR3-RED with a Hunter Grip frame that I had to file the rear screw ears down around 1/8" to fit the earlier frame. It looks like the Hunter grip frame would have been a closer fit to the new mid-size Flat Top frame. Thanks for the help.

Yea at some point in the mid 2000's they made the frame height the same on Blackhawks and Bisleys.

Unfortunately it has been in a box for the last year with a power custom #5 grip frame and a bisley hammer. Nothing liking taking a favorite gun and retiring for a year or two to improve it, right, team? No worries, my shorty stainless 44 special (with a Montado hammer) has been keeping me company of late: No functional issues with the hammers except as mentioned on the transfer bars.
