Now that's neat. Not as big as a 500, but that reminds me of my dad. By age 11 I was shooting full-house 44 Mag. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Trail Boss is definitely your friend with big bores and kids starting out. He's shooting a full case of Trail Boss with Mt Baldy 450 gr cast bullets.
Lee, My dad started us out around 7 years old on his old military 1911 with WWII surplus ammo. Some was stout, some barely had enough energy to bounce off the target. He said they had the same issues in Korea during the "conflict".
I bought my first .44 mag TC at thirteen. In our little town, you had to have some sort of permit at the police station. I had my mom (5'2", 100 lbs) fill out the form and the officer who had to approve it came running out to see what kind of woman that size wanted a .44!

JT wrote about it in about three American Handgunners back. Basically you want the case full with Trail Boss with no (0) powder compression when you seat the bullet.

500fksjr, I just measured the amount of bullet intrusion into the case and then filled the case up to that level. I don't have the amount written down. I use Winchester Large Pistol primers - WLP - listed for regular or magnums. Don't have a chrony so I don't know the velocity but it is a mild load even with the 525 gr bullets. I'd guess well below 1000 fps. Tim

I have found an 80% load to be consistant pleasureable with Trail boss. If your case holds 10 grains to the base of the bullet, no compression, an 80% works well. I believe Hodgdon recommended at one time, 70% to start and 100% max. It do know that loads around 100% are less than perfect as they have never produced the best groups nor the lowest velocity variations. At least in my experience.

Weelll I not a 10year old but .......I like trailboss..... I just bought a 5 lb keg for my 510 GNR 's this was my first outing with this powder and boy it's fun. It allows me to have longer range sessions. I'll shoot my full power loads and when the flinching starts I'll drop in a couple of cylinder fulls of trailboss. The load I'm using is 8.9 grains under a cast 375 gc bullet. Next I'm gonna try it in my Marlin 50 AK.

Dug out my notes and some brass and bullets and here's the load from the picture at the top.
I measured a Mt Baldy 450gr Keith and the portion below the crimp grove was .475". My brass (Starline and Buffalo Bore) are trimmed to about 1.395". If I fill with Trail Boss, leaving 0.475" from the top of the powder to the lip, it takes between 9.9 and 10 grains of TB. This could vary with the brand of brass and your trim to length. Hope this helps. Tim
PS - I just looked up the load on Hodgdon's website and it shows the Mt Baldy 450 gr at 800 fps with 10.0 gr Trail Boss. Show as a max load.
