Right now, the Hamilton Bowen website has this... January, 2004 | Colt Bulletin: (which reads in part)..... Don't you hate it when people don't update their web site?

I have one of the "newer" Colts in 38 w.c.f. and it is a fine gun to say the least. I don't see differences in quality at all from that one and my USFA in the same caliber.
I have a Colt 45 from the mid 90's and it suffers from the over sized chamber throats. It shoots ok, but have to taylor loads for that gun. I recently found a USFA China Camp in 45 Colt, and the throats were perfect. It shoots every load I have tried very well.
Do the newer Colts have proper sized chamber throats now?

Do the newer Colts have proper sized chamber throats now? Dan Some are saying that they do now, but my 2009 SAA has throats at .456-7". Oversized throats are found in .45 Colt SAAs from the late 1st generation on. Hopefully Colt's has finally gotten this last issue "right" for good.

What would be the correct size for chamber throats to barrel. For example, my Ruger 44 Special is .431 to .429 respectively. I was told that is really good.

I've only seen one USFA firsthand. I was at the range and was able to compare it to my Colt 3rd generation side by side. The two guns are both 4.75" in .45 Colt. While the USFA, which I was invited to shoot, was not a bad gun by any means, it was nowhere as nice looking or smooth as my Colt. The bluing was not nearly as pretty, and the action not as tight or smooth. The USFA was new. Given the current pricing of the USFA's, I would not buy one over a Colt. I'm not saying that they are bad guns, but the one I saw pales in comparison to either of my Colts. Bear in mind I'm not disputing what you saw, but the one recent production 4-3/4" .45 Colt Colt SA I saw wasn't as nice as MY USFA guns. AND, if you discount the finish that's standard on the Rodeo, it wasn't fit as nicely as the Rodeo. But, that's comparing only one Colt to 4 USFA guns and we all know that every gun, even sequential guns from the same manufacturer, will be different. Now, I was looking at that Colt because I want a 4-3/4" cch and blue Colt .45 but I couldn't bear to pay that price for a gun of lesser condition than my USFA guns. Yes, money in hand, gun in hand and it wasn't good enough to get me to buy a COLT.

That is the problem I am faced with. I can't find anyplace as yet in MT that has either one so it is hard to compare to the other.

[quote - justahunter ........... I already have several Rugers in the mentioned calibers. I have always wanted a SAA, but have avoided the Colt because of Colt's reputation for a while of producing guns of lesser quality ..................
For what the USFA costs now I think I will go for the Colt if the quality is there. [/quote] Colt's quality is definitely improving, but it's not up to par with USFA yet, for a few reasons mentioned in earlier posts. Also, you're getting more gun for less money if you purchase a USFA model described as their "Single Action Revolver" for a list price of $1,150. which includes Turnbull's authentic CCH on a cross pin frame, in either 4 3/4" or 5 1/2" bbl and chambered in .45 Colt. Go to usfirearms.com to see the specs and options for this SA. If you scroll all the way to the very bottom of the home page, you'll see most of their models listed, so click on "Single Action Revolver".
Your original thread indicated that you wanted a single action revolver, but your local gun shops in MT didn't have a USFA and a Colt in stock in order to make a direct comparison. Well this forum has provided you the next best thing, opinions by owners of both USFA's and Colt's, and I feel that the majority of us who own both, feel that a new USFA, when compared to a new 3rd Gen Colt is a better value, based on overall quality and performance out of the box.
Someone mentioned in an earlier post that a 3rd Gen Colt will increase a lot faster than a USFA revolver and I completely disagree! Outside of Colt's long 130+ year history compared to USFA's short 10 year history (keep in mind we're not talking 1st & 2nd Gen appreciation here) I feel that although USFA is a relatively new firearms manufacturer, it's superb dedicated quality, excellent customer service and stellar reputation will give USFA the advantage toward increasing values over the next 10 years and beyond, in spite of a lack of the "rampant Colt". Conversely, it's going to take Colt sometime to completely shed their poor reputation and tarnished image based on the inept quality associated with their 3ed Gen SAA's, in spite of better quality standards over the past few years.
Can Colt overcome ? ........ let's hope so ........ and once again, thanks USFA for opening their eyes!

Excellent post and I thnk it's safe to say that if it weren't for USFA, Colt wouldn't be putting forth the effort into improving the SAA that they are.

That is the problem I am faced with. I can't find anyplace as yet in MT that has either one so it is hard to compare to the other. Try www.shedhornsports.com In Ennis, 406-682-4210. I just went on their web. & they list a used Colt SAA 4-3/4" 99% CCH Blue, .44 Special at $1299.99 the item # is 54965. I was on their web not 5 min ago. Hope this helps. Frank

It would be nice to look at, but Shedhorn is ~300 miles from here. Maybe time for a road trip will come up. Their used price is more than the MSRP from Colt however.

I own both Colt SAAs and a few USFAs. They both are excellent guns but IMO the USFAs are better guns in pretty much every way. The finish on the USFAs are light years ahead of the Colts I have especially the case hardening. The actions are smoother and most importantly the shoot more accurately for me than my Colts. I will agree that there is something neat about owning an actual Colt SAA which is why I have them but I mostly shoot my USFAs and will purchase more USFAs before I buy another Colt.

USFA single actions are quality but dogs for resale. The only way I can see them ever appreciating in value is if USFA goes out of business.
BTW, 3rd Gen Colts don't magically go up in value either, but are a much easier sell than USFA to Joe Blow gunbuyer.

When will Gunblast be comparing Colt to USFA and telling us which is the better gun? I am a fan of Gunblast BTW. Jeff doesn't do comparison articles. He's rather report on guns individually and let the reader make up his own mind. He says picking out a gun for somebody else is like doing the same with a wife or a truck or a dog.
