My first choice is 5 1/2 but 4 3/4 is a close second.

I have 3 Birds Head Vaqueros in 45 Colt with 3.75" barrels. If I had adjustable sights I think the extra length of the 4.25" barrel FA 97 would be just as compact in looks and feel. The longer ejector rod length would ensure easier extraction of frisky loads. Because of the lead ban in CA I bought some NorthFork Cup Point Solids and the cup point needs 1200 fps impact velocity to flatten. I would want the 4.25" barrel at the least. A load that stiff in a round butt 97 would be a little frisky for these 59 year old hands. That is the nice thing about the Birds Head Vaqueros. The are heavier than their small size would lead one to believe.

I'd go 4-in. if only because that's the shortest allowed for hunting in Tennessee.
