I was just having fun today testing some loads in my NF .44 Special and a couple of .45 Colts and one load in particular was working very well. The two 45s (a Ruger Bisley & Berretta Stampede) just loved this load. I didn't take my camera or chronograph (next time!) but it was a handful in the 4 3/4 Stampede. I got the bullets as-cast from Dave at Montana Bullet Works (I just don't have time to cast right now) so I can't brag about my great bullet casting ability. Anybody got any other recipes with this powder in the .45 Colt? There doesn't seem to be much load data out there. Bullet: RCBS 255 gr. SWC (.452/LBT Magnum Lube/#2 Alloy) Powder: Alliant Herco 8.7 grs. Primer: Winchester Large Pistol Case: Starline Velocity: ?  |

Alliants own website lists Herco and a 255gr bullet at 1021fps with a CCI300 primer and 9.5gr of powder. So I would guess you are about 950 with that load but I am just guessing, I ahve never tried the stuff...

Herco has been my primary powder for the 45 Colt for the last 10 years or so. I once let myself run out of Unique, but had a little Herco someone had given me -- never went back to Unique (in the 45 Colt). Anywhere between 9.0 and 9.2 grains behind everything from 230 LRN's to 285 Keiths by the thousands.

pbcaster45, I'm using 2/10 of a grain less powder than your load & I got an average velocity of 791.98fps & an ES of 28.1fps. That's out of a 3-1/2" bbl Cimarron .45 Colt. The accuracy in just under 3" @25 yards, & 1-1/2" above POA. The cases fall out of the chambers even when I've been shooting quite a bit & the cases aren't sooty. @ 8grs I was having sooty cases. I like that load & use it a lot.
I use my cast RCBS 45-270-SAA bullet cast out of wheel weights, sized .454 & lubed with SPG, & the Rem #2-1/2 primer.

First chance I get I'll make up another batch and post some groups with chronograph results. I really like this powder and I've got 4 llbs of it to burn up! Going deer hunting today - if I don't get on the ball I'm going to have to join a "No Deer Support Group" or something. I wish I hadn't bragged about bagging my limit before the season started. That's what I get for being a blowhard! Forgive me Lord!

Boy, I really procrastinated on this one! Anyway I finally did chronograph my Bisley with another Herco load and here it is. Not +P velocity but no slouch either!
Bullet: RCBS 255 gr. SWC (#2 Alloy/.452/SPG Lube)
Powder: Alliant Herco 9.0 grs.
Primer: Winchester Large Pistol
Case: PMC
Velocity: 1011.74 fps.
ES: 30.32
SD: 11.78

I only tried one pound of Herco, and that was in 9mm back in the 80's. It was a pretty bulky powder as I recall; the reason I stopped using it in 9mm. It was a good powder, otherwise. The extra bulk may be a welcome thing in such a large case as 45 Colt.

Well, I reduced my load down to 8.5 grains and OMG! Everything you could ask for! Power, accuracy, and NO LEADING AT ALL! I've been shooting Herco in my 44-40, 44 Special and 45 Colt to get rid of it - now it looks like a treasure to be hoarded! I may have to get out my old H&G #501 and start casting again! Nope, such a perfect example of the mold makers art is not for sale! I could be sweet talked into taking a picture of it though...

I shoot more Green Dot for reduced handgun, but Herco does seem to burn cleaner now (my dad uses it in his 38-40s). The old version used to be dirty as hell. All around good powder though. -Lee www.singleactions.com |

The "Holy Grail" of threads....at least for today! I cast up some of the .45 270 SAA's from my Mihec mould with the penta hollow point which drops at 260grains. I couldn't find the Herco load data which seemed to be everywhere when I was not looking for it. I'm going to start of with 8.5 grains and see how that works for me. I'm also going to start bookmarking everything, I mean everything, that relates to what I'm shooting.
I'm shooting a New Vaquero and the EAA Bounty Hunter. Right now I'm planning on taking the Bounty Hunter apart and polishing the innards and replacing the main and hand springs before I use it again. All the discussion seems to point to these guns not liking to be run with too stiff springs and ruining the contact areas on the hammer and sear.

I've been burning up some supplies: old Herco in my SBH. 11 grs/old Fiochi primers/ 245 SWC in 44mag assorted cases. This is the smokey stuff but FUN to get in any shooting time, even found my last few old Super Vel brass at the bottom of my brass can.
