Thank you to everyone that participated in this post; all of your comments, questions and responses were appreciated. The photographs were especially helpful and I have decided on a Colt New Frontier and have initiated purchase proceedings. It will be several weeks before the revolver arrives but photographs will follow after receipt of the Colt.
With appreciation, J.D. Press

If it were me I'd go for the Colt New Frontier. They are a great packing six-gun, you get adjustable sights & it is a Colt. Frank

+1 for the Colt... You'll need a USFA too but they are making them every day. I've yet to bring home my first USFA but when I do it will be a 44 Special Flattop Target model... For now there are far to many Colt NFs, Rugers, and FAs that I need.

JD - In response to your original question, and the fact that you'll be shooting it often, I'd opt for the USFA over the 3rd Gen. Colt. You're buying the Colt name only in the 3rd Gen. not the same Colt quality of the 1st or even 2nd Generation guns. The precision, tolerance and overall quality of a new USFA, in my opinion, is the best (along with FA) available, and should hold up better after heavy use. I also think USFA's customer service is possibly the best in the industry. Good luck with your decision. Shadow

Has the Colt quality really improved that much as of late? I've only had one and wasn't impressed however even my lowly $400 Rodeo is fitted nearly as well as my FA!

My vote is for the USFA, I'm currently trying to get the scratch together to get one!
NICE guns.

Late model Colt's are indeed very good but unfortunately the New Frontier has not been produced since the early 1980's (1982?). The heyday of over polishing, poor fitting and gritty actions. Certain things you have to look out for and certain things you have to overlook because it's the only game in town if you want a Colt SAA with adjustable sights. If USFA brought out a New Frontier replica, I'd probably never buy another Colt.

I think you will find the Colts quality is now very good. I've shot two, a late model & earlier 3rd gen. guns they are both very accurate. The fit & finish was good. I think Colt is a viable option nowdays. They will probably go up in value too. That said I do like the looks of the USFA & I'm saving for one. Frank
